I almost never drive recklessly but my average speed can be higher than the limit 😅 Mostly drink driving, but the longest suspension (2 years but no jail time) that I heard in court on one of the days was due to a grievous hurt case caused on a pedestrian at a zebra crossing whereby the driver failed to notice the person crossing....a ball shrinking moment for me when I heard it considering we pass so many pedestrian crossing in our daily commute and cyclist were always zooming in and out assuming that you will notice them and stop on time always. firstmistake 1st Gear February 21, 2023 Share February 21, 2023 This post is a reminder for myself, other road users who are convicted in court for solely speeding and other future speedsters. I was at home in early October 2022 and checked my letter box. I was stunned when I received a letter from traffic police asking me to furnish my particular for speeding in excess of 53km at 80km speed limit of KPE. [Total speed 133km/h]. I recalled that on that day, I was rushing to fetch my wife from work and my son was at home alone. Nonetheless, I remembered going fast on that day but did not expect to be able to reach up to 133km/h. I was riding a Class 2 bike and underestimated my speed. I did not want to make an excuse and quickly furnish my particulars on the police website. At the back of my head, I was thinking: 'Jialat Liao' confirm court.. I did not recall seeing any traffic police on that fateful day. The letter states that I was driving at Lamp post 55. I checked the said lamp post and it was around 200m after I exited KPE, via slip road of Buangkok exit. They must have sniped me around 200m at least. Later, I came to know through news that the new speed camera can capture up to 800m and even can snipe clearly at night. After waiting for almost 3 weeks, I was greeted by another bitter letter from the traffic police. 'Notice to Attend Court on January 2023 and demerit point of 18 was served to me. I checked online and the 18 points was not deducted. I came to know it will be deducted after the court hearing. I did not know what to expect and this forum here has been helpful so far throughout my ordeal. Thank you thread starter and those that came out to share their experience. January 2023 came and I came 1 hour earlier before the time of my mention (Court 7B). Court 7B of state court was previously known as Court 21 of sub court. I was the first person and register my name via the registration kiosk. Court 7B is for traffic offences while Court 7A which was opposite is for regulatory offences. Both of these courts are located at Level 7 of the state court. There are concrete seats outside. Better to be early than late. Slowly, people started to arrive and we were told to enter the Court. Inside the court, a representator will call out your name and check your physical IC and state your offence and what to expect. My offence is Section 131(2) Any person who, under this section or any other provision of this Act or the rules, is guilty of an offence shall be liable on conviction, where no special penalty is provided —(a)in the case of a first offence — to a fine not exceeding $1,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or to both. The representator then asked if I wanted to plead guilty and able to pay the max $1,000 cash once convicted. I said yes. On that day, there were around 12 offenders in the court room. Some of them bring along their friend, girlfriend and lawyers. We then waited for the judge to arrive. Once judge entered, all of us stand rise. I was the third person for my charges to be heard. The first 2 offender had their lawyers. I think those with lawyers will have to be mentioned first. The first person was an old uncle and earlier requested for his hearing to be in Chinese. I did not understand what he was sentenced for but I heard that his lawyer requested for his mention to be adjourned. Then came the second person. Traffic police prosecutor read out all his previous traffic offence since 1990s. He had at least 10 speeding offences but this is the first time he was convicted in court. All of his previous speeding offence were offered a composition. He was driving at speed of 148km on a 90km/h speed limit, in excess of 58km/h. He was recommended for disqualification by the traffic police prosecutor with $1000 fine due to his previous offences. However, he have a good lawyer that argued that most of his offences were at least 20 years ago and plead for leniency, only fine and no disqualification of license. Judge sentenced him with that. Good for him. Then came my turn. The representator told the judge that I wish to plead guilty. Traffic police prosecutor recommended for me to be fine $700. Judge asked me if I have any mitigation plea. I told the judge the truth that I was rushing to fetch my wife from work and my son was alone at home. I further added that I was remorseful for my action and should not have potentially put other road users at risk my speeding. I have not been given any demerit points throughout the 20 years of holding on to a license. Judge agreed with the $700 fine, no suspension in liew of 3 days imprisonment. I was very relieved. I was then escorted by the court officers to the payment machine. I paid via NETS and the kiosk outside the court and went down. Key learning points - No point to speed in Singapore. Cameras are everywhere and the sniper camera keeps getting better. Although I was not given suspension, the $700 was a hard-earned money. It could be spent on my family groceries instead. Throughout this ordeal, I was mentally drained and had nightmares at times. Never had I imagined that I would be on the wrong side of the law. Do not listen to those nasty and hateful comments from the other keyboard warriors online. I sincerely believed that first time is a mistake, second time is a choice. Going to court is not as scary as some people said, but that being said, it is not a nice experience. Hopefully the experience that I shared are helpful to other members here. Stay safe, drive safe. 37
