Myanmar is another country with high possibility of coup if the now president refuses to listen to instruction by the army generals.

looked like a staged coup

Well, the coup appears to be mostly over.

The whole thing was a totally sloppy mess.

Like, outrageously so.

Like, there is very little possibility that the Turkish military, who throws coups regularly, could have screwed this up this badly.

The way you throw a coup is pretty straightforward: first you grab the leader, then grab the media outlets, then put the leader on the media, humiliated.

Instead, these people decided to throw the coup while Erdogan was on vacation. And apparently didn’t even attempt to secure him. By the time the coup began, he was already in a secret location. Then the whole thing went straight to hell, very quickly.

The coup told people to go home, while Erdogan told his people to go on the street. So the coup supporters were at home, while the Erdogan supporters were out on the streets. This is exactly the opposite situation a coup would want.

The coup also started firing on civilians (apparently), which is also something you definitely do not want to do. That makes even people who were inclined to support it turn against it.

err.... we have havent't gone beyond page 2 and the coup has been put down !

some 30 years ago....

On 12 September 1980 General Evren launched a coup that overthrew the government. He went on to serve as president until 1989.

He was put on trial in 2014 and was handed a life sentence for the coup

Some 600,000 people were detained and 50 executed by hanging in the coup. All political parties were banned, with left-wing activists heavily targeted.

He has since passed away.

Current President isn't really well liked, thus the coup.

The attempted coup happened because Turkey is deeply divided over President Erdogan's project to transform the country and because of the contagion of violence from the war in Syria.

President Erdogan and his AK Party have become experts at winning elections, but there have always been doubts about his long-term commitment to democracy. He is a political Islamist who has rejected modern Turkey's secular heritage. Mr Erdogan has become increasingly authoritarian and is trying to turn himself into a strong executive president.

From the beginning Mr Erdogan's government has been deeply involved in the war in Syria, backing Islamist opposition to President Assad. But violence has spread across the border, helping to reignite the fight with the Kurdish PKK, and making Turkey a target for the jihadists who call themselves Islamic State.

That has caused a lot of disquiet. Turkey has faced increasing turmoil and the attempt to overthrow President Erdogan will not be the last of it.

See some of the pics many soldiers looked young like teenagers....pretty much like our NS boys. Many of them are scared stiffed when surrendered and the civilians are fiercer.

My guess is the whole lot of them Don t really have a choice and are just following orders, now kena blamed for treason, very "ai wan".

Erdogran is someone who's setting himself up as a dictator. After this attempted coup, he's arrested most of the secular military leaders and also shun bian arrested a number of judges as well.

Before this, he was making mp/lawmakers eligible to be persecuted for crimes.

Bilahari fb comments on this situation are worth a read.

Turkey is going downhill.

Yeap, and his Islamist AK Party are experts at winning elections.

Turkey ruthless President.

The Army is secular.

But when they play by the rules of "democracy" and wins elections, the West can't say much.

And if EU let Turkey join them with unrestricted movement, well, EU has a lot of thinking to do.

It's a real pity as Istanbul and turkey has a long history of religious harmony and tolerance (with Christianity) even though the rulers are Islamic. It stretches from the times of the Ottoman Empire.

OK well except the Armenian genocide of the 1910s
