You got to list out your priorities and narrow down your choices. This is what I tell ppl when they cannot decide what car to get.

If your first priorities are predictability, reliability and fuel economy your choices are limited to Japanese and Korean makes. No turbo and anything that has a cvt gearbox. Yes, it's boring but if it's your first priority this is it.

Good that you have worked out a budget. Narrowing down your choices shouldn't be too difficult.

Like you, RELIABILTY has been my TOP criterion for cars that I can live with for its life time.

Thus I am on the same page as Watwheels.

- No turbo. Stick to NA

- No CVT, nor dual clutch. Stick to visco-coupled automatics.

- No German-brand, but made elsewhere

- No Japanese-brand, but made elsewhere

The current 4 cars in my stable - 3 German-made, 1 Korean-made ... all NA-engined, automatics and one manual.

From my >35 years of car ownership of different makes, I would like to believe that my selection criteria for reliability has been fully distilled over 3+ decades!

All from brand new:

Worst (most unreliable): BMW, VW and Alfa Romeo.

Best (most reliable): Merc, Lexus and Honda

Note: My Mercs are German-made, the larger-engined one, now on its 7th year with zero problems ... just normal AD w/s servicing only.

The Lexus (of course) and Honda were made in Japan.

Thanks bro, lovely interior, great soft touch materials, and a solid engine.

Cheaper than the A3 by 9k

But..

A - made in Mexico

B - uses the dry clutch...

C - hard for my mum to climb into

So I basically excluded the Golf and it's relatives...

Otherwise I would have gotten the A3 sedan, which was on sale recently. Superb drive.

Yup. I would rule out all VAG cars and its derivatives, if I were you - again, with RELIABILTY as your No. 1 criteria.

HRV is Thai made. Using a older engine compare to the Vezel, less equipment than the Vezel but selling a lot more.

Only good thing is it is from AD.

There are still good PI around.

The new HRV is MIJ and more vroom. [:)]

You have similar considerations as me, am surprised that this car is not in your radar.

May I humbly recommend you to take a look at the Infiniti Q30. Suits pretty much most of your requirements. Budget, need to stretch just a little bit. Sits higher than the sedans. Made in England, with Japanese, German, and French blood. Versatile seats, good fuel economy for the 1.5 turbodiesel (ard 20km/l, can't remember exact), Looks amazing, inside (Alcantara-lined seats and dashboard etc) and outside. Based on the A-class/GLA. Can't comment on the reliability though. Cheers.
