Toyota Harrier Auto transmission problem

Hi guys, I have been facing transmission problem with my 2008 Toyota Harrier 2.4A

Whenever I shift the auto gear to "D", the car will take 1 to 3 mins to engage into the gear. During the wait, the car is as though it is in "Neutral" gear. I do not face any problem with the "R" gear. The "D" shift responds much better after a 20mins drive (when i reach my destination).

This is very annoying as sometimes I have to wait about 3 minutes before moving off from carpark. It also poses a danger when i'm doing a 3 point turn and the car stucks in the middle of the road until the "D" gear decides to engage after 2 to 3 mins.

I have checked the auto gear fluid and it is at the optimum level. Gear fluid colour is also in a clear red colour.

Anyone here knows what is wrong with the auto gear?

Where can I bring it for a repair and how much would it approx. cost?

1 to 3 min or 1 to 3 second? if your car is 2008, it is likely your auto transmission needs a servicing. the service cost is about more than 2k. Try ask Ellipse auto in Sin Min or Kang's auto trans to have an assessment for you.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem. Did you manage to solve it? Do we really have to change the whole gearbox?

The auto transmission can be repaired by replacing the wear and tear components but it will take a few days. It will be faster to replace the transmission (gearbox) with another repaired one. The cost is the same , about 2plus k.

Hi, any specialist workshop recommendation?

I am considering either replacing a refurbished one or a new one since will be renewing COE. Any idea the ballpark figure for a new one?

Will need to go down to workshop for an actual quote.

Hi Bro,

There is 1 workshop at Pandan. He can replace your transmission within 3 to 4 hours with a re-con.

The boss is a nice guy.

You should be able to see his ad in the newspaper at the car section.

I had an extremely "pleasant" experience with this so-called transmission specialist.

They can claim shift solenoid is not part of the tranny so they not responsible for it

And believe it or not, they can fit a tranny that is obviously different from the original after the first replacement failed.

That's really a remarkable business ethic & value the company has

How this issue can be resolved:

1. Ask your mechanic to replace the transmission oil following "original factory recommendation". This could help you at least get the car moving for a few more months.

2. Go to a workshop ask for a second hand gear box. You can check the internet and you can find may dealers selling recon gear box.

3. If your car still can move, drive to Malaysia Johor Bahru, Toyota Heiwa to ask for the gear box to be replaced. It will cost you around RM7 k.

4. If you prefer original parts, take note the new gear box easily cost you around S$10 k, or slightly less than RM30k.

By-the-way, the gear box cannot be repair except clearing and changing to the right gear oil - I was told.

From my own experience in driving a Toyota Harrier, the gear box gave me problem at about 200 k km mileage quite remarkable comparing to other Japanese car that similar problem will surface around 120 k km mileage.

Happy driving!!!

you may want to share the name of that shop so that we used car owners could avoid going to the same shop again. Thanks.

Hi, have you gotten your transmission fixed? May want to share your experience you had with the workshop. I did my service in Ellipse for 2.4k, downtime 4 days. The boss knocked off $100 subsequently knowing that i just needed my auto tran for a year. Afterwhuch i drove my car for a year more before i scrapped it. Edited by Ct3833

Just google for transmission specialist at pandan road & will find it

Add-on:this shop told me transmission fluid is not included so wanted to charge me for $180 after they replaced the tranny for the first time which I refused to accept. They claimed they are using premium transmission fluid & thus very costly so I have to pay for it. After several refusal they lowered the charge to $100 but I insisted not paying.

The car I sent for tranny replacement is a Honda & of what I know Honda tranny is sensitive to the use of transmission fluid that only original Honda fluid is recommended. But this shop uses "premium" fluid that came from a 200 litre barrel of unknown brand..,,,,,

Thanks. Already changed transmission oil around 1 month ago, no use. Too bad your comments came too late as my car is already at my regular workshop. But good to know about the Toyota in JB. Do they service Harrier? Cos if I'm not wrong Malaysia's Harrier also parallel import one.

Hi, haven't got it fixed yet. Currently at my regular workshop, he help me settle as I got no time to look around at the specialist workshops.

The Toyota service center in JB such as Toyota Hiewa near Terbau City never turn down Singapore Registered Toyoda cars including Toyoda Harrier purchased from parallel importer. I have been servicing both my Harrier and Rush at this service centers for quite a number of years.

Neutral Newbie

I think the problem is due to the gearbox oil seal and the different auto clutch plates inside the gearbox. The reason is that the rubber seals inside the gearbox contracted (or loss of elasticity) after many years of wear and tear that prevent the build-up of the pressure enough to engage the gears. It will get better after the engine has warmed up (since elasticity improves after warm up).

There are only 3 ways to solve this problem:

1) Change a new auto gearbox. Cost around 15 - 20k.

2) Change a re-con gearbox. Cost around 2.5k. Usually +++ will come up to 3k. Downside: guaranty is only for 1 month. after that depends on your luck!

3) Repair your gearbox. Cost around 2.5k. Problem is:  After mechanics has taken down your gearbox, and find that it is beyond repair, (if only replacing the seals and the clutch plates cannot solve the problem).  he will still ask you to change to a re-con one. Then you will be double charged!

I know a friend in Johor that can solve this problem. But he only do 1 at a time and boy, he has a long queue. If you are interested, you can PM me.

Rgds,

Jack
