Toyota Harrier Auto transmission problem

Special thanks to mikemawar.

My '03 camry too was having the same delayed engagement problems.  Reverse gear no problems at all but will take some time to get into Drive.  Sometimes had to rev up the car and can slowly feel the car sifting into Drive.  Usually it will jerk into gear and then will have no problems driving after that.  Annoying.

Anyway, read mikemawar's post and asked a friend who could recommend a mechanic.

The mechanic recommended doing an auto filter change and change the auto fluid.  He also added 2 bottles of Auto Transmission treatment oil. (he did warn that it was a 50-50 chance it would work)

Been a week and all problems have gone.  Car shifts into Drive without any hesitation.

Hopefully all is well from now on.

I had previously had 5 different mechanics tell me that I would need to replace my gearbox.  Again, thanks to mikemawar and mycarforum.com.

My '05 Harrier is also facing this problem.

Morning cold starts, the gear refuses to engage when move from N to D.

It is ok to engage to R.

So, have to warm up the car and then press on "Snow ECT" and rev to like 4-5k rpm, then only the gear engages. This is dangerous as the car will spring forward (so no parallel parking).

Last weekend I changed my ATF + ATF Filter + Trans X. So far, this still happens in the morning, but much lesser and milder. Not as bad as previously.

I went to gearbox specialist and asked further, apparently it is common in our Harrier and due to the rubber seals inside the gearbox overtime has deteriorate and causes it to lose pressure etc. A complete repair will costs almost RM 4k and takes about a week. I have not decided which route to take.

Previously my harrier also have the problem of gear refusing to engage intermittently,

then after few month the whole car need to be towed.

I was referred to ah Meng at eclipse pro auto AMK. They got the spare GB done up already, and I can collect my car at the same day. They seems to be very busy with many cars and mechanics around. I would strongly recommend them base on my experience.

If your Auto Transmission do not come with dip stick opening and you have to replace the fluid , always go to shop that has a ATF dispensing unit that come with the right adaptor for the tranny .

Without  the correct tools , shops that try to dispense the ATF with their modified oil dispenser may end up introducing dirt into the system and under or over fill the tranny.
