Actually, it depands on how one look at it. What he had asked, there is 2 sides of the story ....

The "good" way of looking at the question... Knowing that the Mercedes thread is for Merc Fans and Owners, then they should be the most appropriate group to ask the question, if the car they experienced is really relaible with little break-downs or failures.

The "bad" way of looking at the question ... Is it is offensive and out right disrespectful to come into the Fans' thread to ask such touchy questions about their fave brand of cars.

Just saying... peace to all. [;)]

Even if it is reliable, still depends on how the owner takes care of the car and the maintenance regime.

Bro there’s a whole thread debating this.. you can go and have a look..

Essentially just look around and see how many COE Mercedes cars are there running around, then compare it to the other makes... that will give you some idea. Cheers

Mercedes WAS more reliable.

After W124, I don't see a lot of W210 and W211.

This isnt exactly a good benchmark.

I believe the PARF + body value play a sustantial part in the decision on COE renewal.

If u hear what those old Uncle who drive those old merks 're saying, dey called it Mian sew Lee a Chia their mercedes Hokkien pronunciation!

Meaning no need repair the car.

Can used forever!

Build quality. It dipped significantly from the mid-1990s into the mid/late 2000s but it appears to have risen again in the 2010s. That may be a false impression or wishful thinking on my part, and due to the complexity of today's car we may never see the pre-1990s build quality again. Nonetheless W204/205/212s I've driven this decade have shown themselves to have better build quality than W202/203/210/211s.

Enuff said.

All things being equal, a car that allows you to take sweeping corners at 120km/h will have more wears and tears, even the tires wear out faster. Like the Japanese, German automakers also source parts from the same OEM manufacturers.

In life, there are tradeoffs. Lol.

Since I’m an advocate of sharing I shall repost what I sent to the 2 guys.

quite a few merc workshops around.

i have personally tried the following, for my current car.

1. MB auto, amk autopoint.

quite good. Eric is a good mech. not that cheap but decent work.

2. Auto spritze, Kim Chuan Terrace.

My current workshop. quite some mechanics to work on your car. very knowledgeable on mercs and VW. reasonable pricing but can be a little ex for some items.

3. R2D, Woodlands.

More of a BMW workshop. spent 1 year with them. Rodney is detailed. But in the end i decided not to go cause

a. too far from my place at Siglap.

b. odd opening hours 1-10pm. good in the sense that you can drop by at night to get stuff fixed, but the problem is only 4hrs from 1-5pm to work with parts suppliers, thus sometimes the parts get delayed till the next day. meaning i send in the car at 1pm, but the time they strip out the parts and find out what is wrong, sometimes the part shop close for the day and then need to wait till the next day to get the parts.

c. reasonable pricing.

4. Kam Motor, 189 Tanjong Katong

Visited them only once to change alternator as Auto spritze was closed for CNY holidays. only one hoist.as its is a small workshop at the back of the Esso station. cars will be worked on in the sun and sometimes rain. I don't really like it.

Very decent pricing. good thing is that the shop is near civilization. easy to get out from or hang out at the mall should the job just take 1-2hours.

When i had an Old old merc.

1. MB auto

2. MB Auto (JB), same name but different shop.

3. Balmoral Auto

Merc shops i went to chit chat but never did anything

1. Carewell auto, Sin Ming

2. Nam Sing, AMK autopoint

Also those who are looking for owners who hands on, it will be both MB AUTO and R2D.

Thanks mk122

Quite comprehensive,I must add.

Check out a few myself too like auto spritz & R2D.

I brought my mini to R2D for a year to sort out my engine check light problem,Rodney tried, almost there but still not there yet.

The last time probably my last happen when rod was on reservist,

I arrange an appoitment with the Wife for a service(?)

Dey starts @ 1 & the boss normally dun turns up arnd 13.30.

A Mechanic was going on about it,oil change & everything,I ask what does dis service entails?

He ask me to check with boss ,more question from me,get the same answer!

Apparently dis service involve checking lights too.

My left brake light kaput, should b pretty straight forward but it consist of 2 bulbs & dat fella change one dat fails but the other ok bulb 've some connection problem .its obvious one is bright ,the other brighter.

Said Mechanic says its alrite ,I pull along his supervisor for a second opinion.

Dis service involve some basic inspection which basically I can see but no fault was relay to me till billing time.

My cooper brake light was patch up ,driven down the ramp & park in the lot & nobody got the courtesy to update me,I was sitting around hoping to get a signal but it nvr came.

So ,I go out to the Wife & ask how much?

She told me ,my water pump a leaking .

I says what? Change it lah?

She reply, today cannot ,wshop full house,u gotta make an appoitment for another day!

Can I leave it here,as u can see today is choc a bloc, she reply.

Woa,dis bad ,veri bad.

I 'll let the readers decide on dis one.

Sorri,get a bit carried away.

Just an update on my 7G to 9G trade-in through AD that was signed a few months back.  Have collected my new ride a few weeks ago and it is good.  The 9G certainly feels smoother during gear change.  The rest of the car is pretty much the same. The multimedia software seems to have been updated and responds more quickly than my 7G.  The sound system seems better too.  The Thinkware cameras are user friendly as you can access the car cam videos through an app using the camera wifi.  The camera comes with lane departure and forward collision warning systems  but I turned it off as the camera's sensitivity is higher than the car's and I was getting lots of warning sounds which was pretty irritating after a while.

Some follow-up details on the deal in case you may be offered similar trade-in offer.

I managed to increase my trade-in price to 151k from 150k.  This package includes the Car Essentials Plus which adds front and rear brake pads, aircon filter and chemical wash, battery replacements on top of 4x PPS, interior wash, windscreen polish, etc..  They threw in the integrated Garmin GPS for free. I still haven't gotten around to using it much. The good part is that it is touchscreen operated.

I requested for a waiver of early repayment penalty fee on my HP loan with MBFS since new loan is with them too, which my SE said could be done but they need to put in request before the old loan has been paid off. I think it helped that I was using MBFS - I doubt if it can be done if your loan is with a bank. The amount was a few hundred bucks.  I still had to pay the admin fee and some related taxes. So no cash outflow as the new loan covered balance of my old loan and deposit on new car plus a few k left over. Of course, the loan repayment starts all over again!

Unexpected bonus was my insurance rebate on the 7G.  It does not factor in $500 rebate that was given by AD when I renewed the policy in March for $800+ (after $500 rebate).  The pro-rated rebate I received was $800+ too as it is based on actual policy premium of $1300+.

After signing the deal in May, I thought AD would give me a lower price COE when cat B dropped to $32k but they were on the up and up and gave me a $38k May COE which means their margin on my 9G is lower than their margin on my previous 7G.

Overall, I am very pleased with this deal. It would not surprise me to see more of these deals coming out in the months ahead as I think they have targets to meet so hope my points above can help. Gotta thank you guys for your advice and inputs in clarifying my thoughts on this deal.  BTW, SE told me that they will take a big hit on my 7G in the 2nd hand market!

The next question is, can u tell if u 're on TOP gear?

Most ppl tell me 8th is the most dey can reach @ legal speed.
