Can suspension be improved/changed?

I am really new to all these. haha. Yah. I feel it is harsh - but it is also subjective. More or less I experienced similar harshness when I was a passenger in taxis. But somehow, when you become the driver, you become more conscious of such harshness.

is absorber part of suspension? How many components are there?

How much does it cost to change? :)

I think Camry $4 - 500.

The suspension is made of 2 parts.

The coil (black) last a long time and never needs to be replaced

unless cracked which is rare and the absorber (black and yellow)

which needs to be changed every 50k km cos it gets worn out.

If you like a softer ride just ask for absorbers that are softer. The

mechanic will be able to advise.

Pressure and model of the tyres could be the factor as well.

That's also correct. Can get comfort tyres that will

give a softer ride and pump less tyre pressure will

also give a more comfortable ride.

really?

but low pressure will get tyre puncture easily, am I correct?

I always pump around 250, comfort

260 is kinda pumpy.

I never go lesser than that.

as tyre shop told me for profile of 45, always pump more as the side walls are thin

Tyres should follow the recommended pressure levels.

Too high or low equally bad.

Low profile of 45 is inclined for sports performance.

Comfort is secondary.

my previous ride was also about 8 years old when i got it.

i changed all the absorbers for the sake of comfort.

I asked the cost to change, and it came back to be about $200 per absorber.

i figured, i am gonna ride the car till scrap, $800 over 2 years, that is a lot of bone-rattle savings!

one way to test if it is worth changing... go to the back of the car. give it a good downward push. if it returns to equilibrium with more than 2-3 bounce, or when pushing downwards it feels soft, that is one good indicator to change.

repeat for the front at the bonnet.

the other factor to consider is your tire profile. is it 45? 50? or more?

for me, i find 45 too thin. so i upgraded to 55 (the max allowed by my rims at that time).

using these two combined, you should get a more comfortable ride.

mind you, my car is a red plate. if yours is a normal plate and you drive more regularly than mine, then do the above two test to decide if your butt is worth the cost of the absorber/tire change for two years.

Thank you Ah Gong! I try it out tonight. :) How do I know my tyre profile? 45 ? 50? 55? I only know 32A, 34B, 36C....  :chilling:

Thank you! I googled for prices of absorbers on eBay, but when I check the shipment fees,it is double the price of the absorbers. haha.

One absorber is $500? Means 4 is $2000?

piang eh... go look for the tire thread. lots of discussion there on how to read tyre profiles.

yeah, I also new to this.

Savvy and saga blm using the same setup, famous for rear weakness.

as you know, Malaysian are very creative.

they actually mentioned that perdana front spring will works, if you want better, change the rear absorber to waja.

since I got 9 more years to go, just do it. save the headache..

interesting.

my FIL waja looks like need to change liow, due to age.

RM240 is cheap~!

Bro, pressure in tyres has nothing to do with whether it's easier to get tyre puncture.

It's luck...haha.

I changed all 4 shock absorbers, the ride improved dramatically. The mech told me 2 shorb absorbers have "worn out" and the shock mounting brackets have cracked.

Then I changed all 4 tyres to slightly bigger profile versions, it feels more comfy now.

A shock to my wallet too. [:|]

The smarter way is to buy absorbers/shocks from stockist (depend on car make/brand distributors) mostly in waterloo st & Little India area and head to your workshop for labour only. Remember to do alignment at tyre shop to avoid uneven wear.

My last few cars was done the same way and it saved me quite a bit then going to workshop and carrot. Make sure they diagnose and change all affected/worn out parts (e.g cv boot/lower arms/bushings/mounts etc) while at it since the labour cost is going to be the same.

For best comfort & occasional spirited cornering, sports shocks like Koni & Bilstein is a must. Coilovers are mostly harsh unless matched with the right springs(H&R,Eibach) which will take some trial & error.

Hi All,

Looking for suspension specialist. My 4 year old Camry has an inherent problem. When reversed the car, exhaust alway kit the curb. Checked with Borneo & responded that suspension/exhaust placement is OK. Suggested to ask passengers to come out before reversing !!! How can???

Please advise.

My Kia cerato already 160k, never had to change one shock absorber, still function as like new.Only changed the front suspension mountings as the rubber has began to weaken.  I wondered how you all change absorber so early, absorber can last very long time.

I got a 2nd hand car recently. Cheap thrill and cleared off one thing on my todo list.

It has 2 years left. Thinking should get a new one after 2 years later if coe still affordable. Haha

My current drive feels rather bumpy - one factor is our roads that have many patches but i realised i am feeling almost every bump. I feel that should not be the case, isn't it?

I am thinking is this some kind of suspension problem? Can it be resolved by replacement parts?

My mech actually said that perhaps not worth it to change part by parts since its an old car ( there are other minor quirks which are non crucial and i was advised to ignore it. )

Is up to you really. Suspension can be changed all sorts of ways. But good to take a look and see if there's something wrong first.

As some have mentioned, change shock absorber might make a difference. They cost a couple of hundred each so u decide if it's worth the outlay.

My previous ride though I went to change the entire rear suspension setup when I got it, cost me about 2k.
