Watwheels Supersonic June 13, 2017 Share June 13, 2017 (edited) I'm thinking employment for taxi drivers who have lost their jobs. Most of them in the 40-50yo age group. Dan there are also uber/grab drivers. I mean they have gotten used to the flexible work hours, the pay, the perks, you know...will they able to take up regular jobs again? Right now there are about 27K taxi drivers. Plus uber/grab maybe about 30K++ people? And most of them are 40-50yo that not many companies want to employ. What's next. I mean govt will have to deal with the surge on unemployment and the ongoing ageing population. Dan there's the white paper population. Maybe initially car population will drop due to AI and effective car pooling services but once population go up and mrt/bus cannot cope the vehicular population will go up again. When everyone goes to study/work at the same time...say hello to major congestion at peak hour. End of the day you ask yourself. Are we going back to square one or are there going to be a new set of problems? Edited June 13, 2017 by Watwheels
13177 Supersonic June 13, 2017 Share June 13, 2017 Driverless car? I still not very comfortable with driverless car, even a driverless train. Lol. Even vehicles operate by human can also go wrong lo.

Most likely to succeed is a driverless car or train on a dedicated track and no other vehicles are allowed on it. Even then, driverless LRT already have problems. Now, to let loose driverless vehicles on the road... Right now, I had gps tells me to cut across 5 lanes at Cross St in heavy traffic to reach the other side. Imagine the driverless car attempting to do it. Who will give way to it ? What happens if it bang into someone else's car for not giving way ?

Yeobt Supercharged June 13, 2017 Share June 13, 2017 PHV can never take over the taxi. some commuters are still prefered to flag down and go. beside, PHV can be more expensive on certain time and at some places. PHV is just an alternative to taxi at some points. on one hand the PHV was trying to attract riders with cheap fare and on the other hand high fare to attract drivers. how to have both? there are many cases that Uber have failed and bankcrupt in some countries. now is 3 parties fighting in sgp. surely, only one can survive.
Friendstar Supercharged June 13, 2017 Share June 13, 2017 (edited) It won't work. Not in the near future. Not in big scale. Yes to maybe tertiary campus. For it to be fully commercialised. U need to invest super heavily in fail safe infrastructure The cost benefit will render it commercially unviable. Unless.... Govt intervention Even if so... The human mind is a powerful thing. It will take a lot to convince society to accept this. One life lost due to human judgement, ok. One life lost due to bad computer algorithm. Disaster. When will society be ready? When planes take off and land without pilots. Then autonomous vehicles will proliferate Edited June 13, 2017 by Friendstar

Of course in the next few years will be hard to believe.
Benarsenal Turbocharged June 13, 2017 Share June 13, 2017 I think fully autonomous cars will still be a while yet. At least 20 years away if not more. HOWEVER. Knowing Singapore, they will like to rush through these things and faster implement, just to have the bragging rights to say they are first. But this is something very serious that involves infrastructure and interaction with other surrounding elements as well. I foresee disaster if Singapore attempts to rush through the development and implementation of driverless vehicles. But I won't be surprised if they do. So prepare to expect lots of cock accidents caused by computer-driven cars in the years ahead. Then they will use that excuse to...collect more taxes again. Well done.
Victor68 Turbocharged June 13, 2017 Share June 13, 2017 What a joke is my answer. Some major inventions need to be found before you will find this happening, especially in crowded city like Singapore. I also hope to be proven wrong.

Victor68 Turbocharged June 13, 2017 Share June 13, 2017 all these technology hypes are saleman talks. many are still far from reality. of course they would need time and opportunities to fulfill what they promise to deliver. however, overstatement is no good too. a major concern i have with these remote controlled vehicles is what happen when someone hacked into it and use it to perform certain functions that are harmful to public? Do we have an emergency button to cut off the system? even simple elevator also go crazy after more than 80 years of R&D.

Kb27 Supersonic June 14, 2017 Share June 14, 2017 Driverless car got NCD anot? driverless car will have a sticker that says "in case of accident, contact xxxx" in the mean time, the driverless car will auto-lock itself and stay there not moving, regardless of the traffic jam it will caused. wait for insurance to come down and check. it might also trapped some passengers inside. good luck to those who will try. ↡ Advertisement
