Hi, my laptop is screaming to retire. Looking for a basic laptop within $1K budget. Very confused by the jargons of core i7, Ghz, etc. What is cheap and good for this budget? I would think it should be 512 GB SSD, 8 GB internal memory & 14 inches screen. Appreciate your recommendation and where is the best place to buy. Online I am not familiar. Courts or Gain City?

This is quite a good deal.

Ryzen 7 CPU - means there are more cores to help you process things easier.

8GB ram - for light usage is more than enough.

512gb SSD -

15 Inch monitor - very decent for laptop,

It depends on what u want. Unfortunately days of cheap cheap laptops are gone with supply chain issues and wfh/hbl. I don't think 1 k goes as far as it did two years ago.

14" generally for portability. 15" for home use if u want. 13" will be a strain for our eyes since its all the same resolution.

Weight if u are lugging it around. Sacrifice some things for reasonable portability. Good enough screen (? Matte vs glossy, bright enough if u using on the go outdoors) and keyboard for your own use.

Anything with Intel i5 and above is OK. That's 4 cores minimum. Do not get an i3. The amd ryzen 3000 series would be OK. Better power draw ie battery life if its a ryzen 4000 series.

Yes the above specs would be sufficient for home or simple work use. Best is have an empty upgradeable slot for further addition of ram in future.

If u are the type to have lots of chrome browser tabs and multiple windows open. Can consider getting 16gb of ram. But generally not required for light users.

All laptops in this price range will have their  drawbacks depending on what u are looking at.

Wow that is confusing for me because i7 itself has plenty versions. KobayashiGT Sony is easy to understand. I thought Sony usually is slightly more expensive?

https://store.acer.com/en-sg/sale

Sale on till 23 Sep 2021.
Cheap and fairly reliable. I recommend the extended warranty. I normally don't expect laptops to last very long at these prices. I get myself a new laptop every 3 or 4 years.
Just hoot a Swift 5 laptop 3 days ago, weight is only 1.04 kg. Received it 2 days later. Warranty already pre-registered by Acer.
Bought at Acer flagship store via Shopee, can collect some Shopee cashback points as well.

Practically speaking for your price category it doesn't matter. There's difference in performance for i7 levels. But if u don't game or do video editing, any i5 or i7 is more than enough.

I won't pay for an i7 more than an i5 at your price category. It simply won't be an appreciable difference to you. Even if it costs 50-100 dollars more for the same model.

If for personal use why don't consider a refurbished set.

A quarter of your budget  some set the specs are as good as new or even better with upgrade.

My refurbished set is still going strong after two years with rough usages ....streaming. 🤣 Only done 1 reformatting till date.
