The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 Is The First Of The Brand's New Off-Road Packages

https://jalopnik.com/the-2019-gmc-sierra-at4-is-the-first-of-many-new-off-ro-1824095148

The 2019 GMC Sierra is kicking off the New York Auto Show with the debut of its AT4 package, upgrading the new truck for your off-pavement activities while previewing an all-new sub-brand of off-the-lot off-road GMCs.

Yeah, that’s right. The quasi-premium truck and SUV sub-brand of Chevrolet is spawning its own sub-brand of off-road vehicles, for the truck buyer who doesn’t want a Ford or Ram and whose friend just bought a Chevy, and who wants more off-road capability but doesn’t know how to, or doesn’t want to customize it themselves. I guess.

The 2019 Sierra AT4 gets a two-inch lift, four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, skid plates, locking rear differential, traction selection system for different road surfaces, off-road Rancho shock absorbers, Hill Descent Control, that 5.3-liter V8 and bespoke 18-inch or 20-inch wheel designs with all-terrain tires.

Aesthetically, the Sierra AT4 gets bespoke 18-inch or 20-inch wheel designs with all-season tires, body-colored grille, door handle and bumper treatments, bespoke interior trim design, red recovery hooks and that cool ass tailgate.

It’s also available with an optional heads-up display, rear-view mirror camera, carbon fiber bed, and safety features like lane-change alert, blind spot monitoring, Surround Vision cameras, front pedestrian braking and low-speed automatic braking.

Finally, it can be optioned with either the 6.2-liter V8 or 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax diesel paired with the 10-speed automatic. Pricing for the AT4 has yet to be announced, along with when, exactly, it will go on sale. It was previously announced that new Sierras would start hitting dealerships in the fall of this year.

The rest of the new sub-brand of off-roading GMCs will be announced over the next two years. It’s no Raptor, but it’s still pretty cool. I hope we somehow get a Chevy Bolt AT4, like, eventually.

SPYSHOTS: Ford Ranger T6 WildTrak facelift in the US

https://paultan.org/2018/04/13/spyshots-ford-ranger-t6-wildtrak-facelift-in-the-us/

Ford-Ranger-Wildtrak-facelift-4-630x330.

The Ford Ranger T6 WildTrak looks set to receive another facelift, with our spies managing to spot an undisguised unit on the streets of Dearborn, Michigan alongside a Ranger Raptor. Both vehicles seen here are right-hand drive, which could indicate they will be destined for our market in the future.

Design-wise, the WildTrak adopts many of the revisions seen on the latest Ranger destined for Thailand and the United States, the latter set to go on sale in early 2019. The front is akin to the range-topping Lariat model that will be sold in the US – there’s a new hexagonal grille with twin bars and the Ranger name stamped on it, and the fog lamp enclosures also adopt a new shape.

However, where the Lariant has an additional bumper trim to cover the lower apron along with a more aggressive skid plate, both these items are absent on the WildTrak. Around the back, the mule gets a similar taillight design as the US-spec Ranger, with the addition of a retractable tonneau cover for the flatbed.

It’s much the same story on the inside as well, with noticeable changes being the new gear selector, seats, tweaked media buttons and ‘WildTrak’ badging on the dashboard. The control dial for the four-wheel drive system appears to be identical to the one found in the current WildTrak we have here.

Currently, the US-spec Ranger is set to go on sale in early 2019, with three models being offered – XL, XLT and Lariat. The WildTrak and Raptor models could be added to the range later on, with the latter already being sold in Thailand, the country where it first made its debut.

All Ranger models in the US are powered by a 2.3 litre EcoBoost four-cylinder petrol engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The ‘Bi-Turbo’ wording on the side scuttles suggests the WildTrak will use the 2.0 litre EcoBlue twin-turbo diesel found in the Raptor, which offers 213 PS and 500 Nm of torque, also mated to a 10-speed auto.

The current WildTrak sold in Malaysia is offered with a P5AT 3.2 litre five-cylinder Duratorq engine (197 hp and 470 Nm) paired with a 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission. The WildTrak trim was also available with the ZSD-422 2.2 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, albeit for a limited time in the past.

Ford could resume F-150 production as early as next week

http://money.cnn.com/2018/05/11/news/companies/ford-f-150-production/index.html

The company told employees that they should expect to return to work at its plants in Dearborn, Michigan and outside of Kansas City, Missouri on May 18, a Ford spokesperson said on Friday. The company suspended production at the two plants — the only ones that make the truck — after a fire at a supplier's facility caused it to run out of parts.

The F-150 has been the top selling US vehicle by any manufacturer for more than 40 years. It's a key profit generator for Ford.

The automaker halted production at the Dearborn location on Wednesday, after temporarily closing the location in Missouri.

"This is a fluid situation," Joe Hinrichs, president of global operations at Ford said in a statement on Wednesday. He added that "any impacts will be short term."

Ford has about an 84-day supply of the F-Series truck in dealers' inventories, so the company never expected a shortage that would impact clients or dealerships.

The fire was at the Meridian Magnesium Products of America plant in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, on May 2.

Ford has sold 287,000 F Series trucks in the United States in the first four months of this year, up 4% compared to a year ago. That includes some larger trucks than the F-150, although the F-150 makes up the overwhelming majority of those sales. It also is more than four times the sales of its second best selling vehicle, the Escape SUV.

7,600 workers build F-150 trucks at the two plants. They will get most of but not all of their pay during the temporary layoff.

2019 GMC Sierra Elevation Brings a Turbo Four to the Lineup

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/2019-gmc-sierra-elevation-brings-a-turbo-four-to-the-lineup

2019-gmc-sierra-elevation-101-1528303669

The Chevrolet Silverado might not always get what the GMC Sierra pickupoffers, but for the most part, the Sierra takes whatever the Silverado brings to the table. Such is true of General Motors’ new turbocharged four-cylinder engine that was first announced for the Silverado LT and RST and will join the Sierra lineup in the just-announced Elevation model.

The Sierra Elevation also distinguishes itself with several small visual changes. The door handles, bumpers, and grille surround match the body color. GMC blackened the grille insert, tow hooks, side-window trim, and 20-inch aluminum wheels; and the headlights, fog lights, and taillights are equipped with LEDs.

Based on the double-cab model, the Elevation can be had with either two- or four-wheel drive. In addition to the 2.7-liter turbo four that makes 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque, a naturally aspirated 5.3-liter V-8 also is available. Both are linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Elevation will gain a third engine choice in early 2019, in the form of a new turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six that will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Official power figures have yet to be announced for the V-8 and the diesel.

Although the name suggests GMC might have thrown in a few trail-ready components, that’s not the case; the available X31 off-road package is an extra-cost option. It includes a specialized suspension with Rancho shocks and also adds a locking rear differential, Hill Descent Control, a heavy-duty air filter, underbody skid plates, dual exhaust, a two-speed transfer case, and all-terrain tires. GMC’s ProGrade trailering system and roof-rack accessories also are available but not included.

GMC isn’t yet saying what it will cost to live the high life, but expect pricing to be announced closer to the truck’s fall 2018 launch.

Did Chevy move needle enough with '19 Silverado?

http://www.autonews.com/article/20180814/BLOG06/180819897/did-chevy-move-needle-enough-with-19-silverado

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. -- The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado may set a new industry standard for engineering and ride. It's smooth and nimble, and the V-8 powertrains -- representing a vast majority of projected sales -- are a joy to drive.

Particularly impressive are General Motors' use of mixed materials to lightweight the vehicle up to 450 pounds, advancements in its box and industry-first technologies such as dynamic fuel management, which is an advanced form of cylinder deactivation that runs seamlessly between two- and eight-cylinders.

Trekking through hilly, windy roads last week in Wyoming and Idaho in the V-8 models was thoroughly enjoyable. There was little to no wind or road noise entering the cabin, and the pickup handled superbly thanks to a stiffer frame and overall engineering.

Those attributes alone should retain loyal Chevrolet buyers while possibly attracting a few traditional truck buyers from close rivals.

However, what the 2019 Silverado may have trouble doing is attracting new truck buyers -- a Chevrolet goal as non-brand-loyal millennials increasingly enter the pickup market. Top-end Silverado models also will likely struggle to conquest luxury pickup buyers who use the vehicle more for an office than a tool.

Where the Silverado excels in engineering and ride, it lacks in special features and amenities -- particularly on the interior. Both are keys for younger buyers and luxury buyers. To an untrained eye, it looks like a refreshed interior of the outgoing pickup.

A familiar interior, according to officials, was executed by design after customer clinics found that the outgoing interior was what people wanted. So, designers made tweaks and changed surfaces but kept the overall design.

"We go to clinic, our truck customers tell us they want what they already have," said Kelly Craigo, of Chevrolet's design team. "So we're not going to give them the same interior over again. What you see is, architecturally, it is very similar, but everything is brand-spanking new. Every surface is brand new."

That's fine and well for traditional buyers; however, the Silverado falls short in interior advancements compared with Fiat Chrysler's Ram pickup, which is also redesigned for the 2019 model year.

And it's not just the optional 12-inch touch screen on the high-end models or reclining rear seats of the Ram 1500. All Ram 1500s feature an electronic knob gear shifter instead of a column shifter -- a design many younger buyers (especially new to pickups) are completely unfamiliar with unless they were handed down their grandparent's Mercury or Cadillac.

The Silverado is exclusively equipped with a column shifter and even traditional keys in low-end models -- another trait many younger buyers are not used to having.

Ram also offers a larger driver information cluster starting at around $41,000. That compares with Chevrolet, which exclusively offers an 8-inch display standard on the high-end High Country, with pricing starting at $54,495, including shipping. Ram also features a unique adjustable center console.

In targeting luxury buyers, the Chevrolet High Country needs to climb higher. Ford and Ram have significantly increased the amenities and materials in their highest-end pickups, while the High Country is essentially an LTZ model with additional standard features.

GM officials argue Chevrolet doesn't necessarily need to play as high in the luxury segment because the company has the GMC Sierra; however, they'll also say the brands attract different buyers.

Ram and Ford also offer adaptive cruise control on their big pickups, while Chevrolet doesn't offer it at this point. (It looks like the pickup is equipped with all the needed technology aside from radar, so expect it in the coming model years.)

Overall, is the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado a great truck? Yes. Will it continue to get better? Yes. Could Chevy have added more flair to attract nontraditional truck buyers? Yes.

Ford recalls 2 million pickups to address seat belt fire concerns

http://www.autonews.com/article/20180906/OEM11/180909864/ford-recalls-two-million-pickups-f150

WASHINGTON -- Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it would recall 2 million F-150 pickup trucks in North America to address fire and smoke concerns in seat belt pretensioners.

The automaker said it was aware of 17 reports of smoke or fire in the United States and six in Canada relating to belt pretensioners, but was not aware of any accidents or injuries as a result of this condition.

The mechanism of the pretensioner, which works in tandem with airbags, involves an explosive charge that locks a seat belt in place during a crash.

Some pretensioners in front seat belts could generate excessive sparks when deployed, resulting possibly in a fire, the company said.

The recall covers 2015-18 Ford F-150 Regular Cab and SuperCrew Cab vehicles in North America for driver and front passenger seat-belt pretensioners.

Ford said the recall included 1.62 million U.S. vehicles, 340,000 in Canada and 37,000 in Mexico.

Ford, in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, said the recall will cost it about $140 million and will show up in its third quarter earnings.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began probing reports of fires in the trucks earlier this summer.

Owners should "take action" when they receive recall notices from Ford disclosing the timing for free repairs, NHTSA said in a statement Thursday.

The automaker "identified this issue through its normal quality processes. We have been cooperating with the agency, as we always do," Ford spokeswoman Elizabeth Weigandt said on Thursday, referring to NHTSA.

There were five complaints alleging fires following the activation of seat-belt pretensioners, the NHTSA said.

To resolve the issue, dealers will remove some insulation material and remnants of wiring harness tape from the vehicle's B pillar area, and apply heat-resistant tape to the carpet and its insulation. They will also modify the back interior panels of Regular Cab vehicles. The B pillar is the vertical support behind a vehicle's front seat windows.

Transport Canada contacted Ford in November 2017, regarding a B-pillar area fire on a 2015 model year vehicle, prompting a joint vehicle inspection by Ford and Transport Canada.

Ford said the components in the older 2015-2017 models were built by Japanese supplier Takata, which was acquired by Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp., while ZF Friedrichshafen AG built the parts starting with the 2018 model year.

Off road cruise control!!!

https://www.motor1.com/news/265412/ford-raptor-trail-control/

2019-ford-f-150-raptor.jpg

In July this year, the 2019 Ford F-150 got a new range-topping 3.5-liter V6 engine with 450 horsepower (335 kilowatts) and 510 pound-feet (692 Newton-meters) of peak torque. It’s basically the motor that powers the hardcore F-150 Raptor put into a more civilized version of the pickup. To return the favor of giving its engine, the Blue Oval is now upgrading the Raptor with a new cool feature called Trail Control.

Think of it as a cruise control system for an off-road use. It controls braking and throttle, allowing drivers to focus entirely on steering. According to the automaker, the system makes “taking Raptor through the rough stuff more fun than ever.”

Available in all 4x4 modes, the Trail Control can operate with speeds of between 1 miles per hour up to 20 mph. It’s an intelligent system that directs torque to the wheel with highest traction and braes when necessary to smoothly bring the truck down on the other side. Also, it can help you take the F-150 Raptor out if it happens to get stuck in extreme sand.

GM to recall about 1.2 million vehicles worldwide

(Reuters) - General Motors Co (GM.N) is recalling 1.205 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles worldwide due to issues with a temporary loss of power steering, the No.1 U.S. automaker said on Thursday.

The recall covers certain 2015 Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac pickup trucks and SUVs, and includes about 1.02 million vehicles in the United States. GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said the automaker has received reports of 30 crashes and two injuries, but no deaths linked to the recall.

The problem may cause difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash, according to auto safety regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. GM dealers will update the power steering module software, free of charge for owners of the affected vehicles. In 2017, GM had recalled here nearly 800,000 pickup trucks worldwide because of the same problem.
