I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism 3 yrs ago, on 6 monthly eye/vision checks. Carbimazole reduced to 5mg alternate days for past 1.5 yrs.

I observed that my TSH level tend to be lowered whenever I take alcoholic drinks during stretch between appointments.

Yes, that episode of increased pressure behind one eye was due to Thyroid eye disease.

What I'm worried more is the antibody level which remains elevated despite T3, T4 & TSH being within normal range. It seems elevated antibody levels is the cause of increased fat build up behind the eye.

Actually I'm planning an optimal time to have my thyroid gland removed.

Thyroid removal via surgery is usually last resort as you can damage your vocal cords.  Did your endocrinologist not recommend that you consider radioactive iodine if carbimazole doesn’t work?

Thanks bro. No idea what the radio is going to be actually shooting. I understand from the doc is thru both sides of my temples.

I may also risk early cataract as a result..

Ya.. if that happens, I'll overhaul my lens and probably not need wear specs anymore 🤞

Yeah

then u get 20/20 after that

I used to have hyper-thyroid for years until I went for radio-iodine drink 6 months ago. Now my thyroid condition is under control and I'm taking a 5mg thyroxine tablet a day to stabilise the condition. Strongly suggest you go for this treatment instead of going under the knife. Cheers!

I think there's a mistake in your mention of Thyroxine dosage as 5mg is 500mcg which is way too much, according to my Endocrinologist when I shared your post. He said usually the post radioiodine thyroxine dose is from 50-100mcg daily.

We discussed long term Hyper thyroid treatment options and it seems surgery is the better option as I have 2 thyroid nodules as well, since there's always possibility that these may grow in size or turn malignant.

Try to avoid surgical removal. You'll end up feeling like a different person. Really!

Mine is Thyroid eye disease, said to be related to the thyroid condition Graves disease earlier on.

While it affects more female, males get this also. I didn't get a conclusive answer from the doc what causes it, but from their questions asked to me, I believe it can be generic or even stress. I don't have family history, so I think stress is a factor.

The body attacks the eye muscles such that it weakens and not able to move the eyeballs properly.. so a result, one eye move lesser than the other, causing double vision.

Eyeball and eye muscles also swell. Need to go for these treatments to stop the swelling or for my case, might press on the optic nerve and affect my vision further. The CT scan confirms that.

Some people delayed treatment and their eyes pop out like frog. Very scary. Mine isn't noticable.. Good thing I discovered early.. 🙏

Cut down on seaweed. Eat fewer heaty stuff.

Why "end up feeling like a different person"?   Please do elaborate. Thanks

Tired the whole day, prone to depression, social withdrawal, poor appetite, breathlessness when exercising, hair loss, dry hair, puffed up under eyes, sensitive to bright light, irritable, distracted, disinterest in everyday things and hobbies, etc.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and advised to stay away from a high-potassium diet. Aside from an endocrinologist, we decided to see Dr Lau Chee Chong, an ENT specialist near our area who said I had a thyroid lump. Both doctors did not prescribe me with medicines and instead just told me to observe the lump and come back after a few months for another round of tests. Thankfully the lump went away on its own. It was a confusing experience, until now we're not 100% sure what it was, but we're relieved the lump was not cancer 😕

It's a thyroid nodule. Very low chance of it being cancerous. Docs will order an ultrasound only if it is at least a certain size (2cm, I think).

This is worrying, particularly the depression.  Are these what you are facing,  being Hypothyroid?

While the thyroid condition is under control, eyes have been affected as well.

I've just undergone one of a series of IV drip sessions today that's to be done over a few weeks.

So far no noticable improvement.. but get to experience the painful poking of needles on my forearm and back of my hand..

Later in the coming weeks for a complementary radiotherapy session to the eyes..

Hope it's all worth it. Crossing fingers 🙏

Hi Solar,  have you completed the course of IV steroids and Radiotherapy yet?

Hope to hear from you as to whether you experienced improvement and any side effects of the IV steroids.

I'm having pain and discomfort in my eyes too and they are noticeably more protruding.  Been taking Circumin (as it is believes to reduce inflammation) daily past 2 weeks with no improvement. Looks like I have to make an appt to see my eye Dr earlier.

Sorry to hear that bro.

I've completed the radio but still some more sessions to go with the steroids. Swelling seems to be stopped, but my double vision persists. Probably need more time.

Side effect is dependent in individuals. I personally don't experience any, other than having to poke by the needle for IV.

Honestly, I don't think u should rely on alt medications cos we don't know how much dosage to be effective, if at all.

Better make an appointment with the doc and get referred quickly.

Hope you regain normal vision soon.  Took your advice, made appointment and seen by a specialist at SNEC.

After various tests, including retina examination, Dr thinks the discomfort and swelling on one eye was due to inflamed muscles.  Many tubes of blood were drawn for further tests for other autoimmune disorders.

Meanwhile, the Ibuprofen prescribed has reduced the upper lid swelling and relieved the discomfort within 24 hrs.  Keeping fingers crossed waiting for blood test results. 🤞

Just diagnosed with high level of thyroid today. More than a month I can't run, only can do brisk walking and with heart palpitation. Will be on carbmimazole for 6 weeks before a review.

What can be the cause, why suddenly I have this? The doc couldn't tell me,  and say that it happens.  I a wonderin if is it run too much, diet not right, not enough sleep?

It just happens. Have to be careful and manage your irritation / temper as it can spike due to the hormone imbalance. Try and take things a little easy, do short brisk walks to keep your fitness. Have to watch your food intake as high thyroid levels will mean that you can eat like there’s no tomorrow. But when the carbmimazole kicks in, you’ll still be used to that level of food intake.

Thanks for the helpful advices and things to watch out for. I guess this is the initial phase, no temper, and appetite the same. Most drastic changes are the heart palpitation and suddenly one day cannot run,  i.e. 1km into the run already heh heh chuan even at what used to be easy pace.
