Malaysian government declares polling day a public holiday

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's federal government has declared May 9, polling day, a public holiday.

This is to allow all Malaysians to fulfil their responsibilities as voters, said the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a statement on Wednesday (Apr 11).

“The declaration on the public holiday is made based on Section 8 of the Public Holidays Act 1951 for Peninsular Malaysia and the Labuan Federal Territory,” said the statement.

The Malaysian Election Commission had on Tuesday announced dates for nomination and polling day for the country's 14th general election

Many had expressed concern that having the vote on a Wednesday, Malaysia's first weekday poll in nearly two decades, would affect turnout at the ballot boxes

Malaysians had reacted to announcement of the weekday polling date by taking to social media to offer transportation and funds to those who wanted to return to their hometowns to cast their ballots. Several Malaysian companies on Tuesday also declared May 9 a holiday for staff.

What can be done have been dealt with,

- New electoral maps for the upcoming geneal election (err what is new, as we have seen such move here for the past many GEs)

- Mahathir Mohamad's political party provisionally dissolved (leading to massive re-nego on who to contest in which state, etc.)

- Polling day on weekday, may contribute to a low voter turnout (and most working overseas are traditionally opposition supporter)
- Clearing Najib of any wrongdoing in PAC report over 1MDB (meaning oppositions trying to Najib to 1MDB can be sued for defamation)
- And of course Anwar is still behind bar... ...

Avoid spreading fake news during election season: PM Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Wednesday (Apr 11) that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government is open to criticisms, but that must not lead to the spread of fake news or false information about the government.

“We want to develop a matured democracy. We can criticise the government, but do not spread fake news (about the government),” Mr Najib said at an event to celebrate the first National Journalists' Day.

Highlighting the importance of tackling fake news in light of the upcoming 14th general election, Mr Najib cited the example of allegations in the last election that the BN had brought in 40,000 phantom voters from Bangladesh.

The turned out to be fake news, he said, adding that if this were true, a number of 747 jumbo aircraft would be needed to bring the Bangladeshis to Malaysia.

We are entering the silly season in a couple of days’ time. During this season, silly and irrational news stories will come out. These news stories do not make sense, but when spread, people tend to believe,” said Mr Najib, who is also BN chairman.

this time no need lah.

I think BN will win easily.

Jib Kor actually is very effective at solving all the problems he faced earlier.

He's actually a very good problem solver but not in the right way for MY ...  [laugh]  [:p]
