School Girl Fell to Death During Disaster Mgt Training

Recommended Posts

Jin scary, pushed down by school trainer as part of some disaster management training.  I've never heard of such training, making people jump down from a school building.  :a-noway:  Parents must be devastated.  [bigcry] Other students watching will require psychological counseling.   [hur]

RIP.  :a-rip:

Coimbatore: A 19-year-old undergraduate student died when she jumped off the second floor of her college building during a disaster preparedness drill in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu on Thursday evening.

N Logeswari was a second year student pursuing Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) course at Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science at Narasipuram.

Around 4 pm on Thursday, students of the college were being shown how to escape if disaster struck. A video of the training session showed Lokeswari perched on the sunshade of the second floor balcony, when the trainer Arumugan, standing next to her, was telling her to jump.

Eyewitnesses say Logeswari was reluctant and did not want to but was prompted repeatedly by the trainer. After a while, the trainer pushed her and she tumbled down hitting her head on the sunshade of the first floor.

Though students standing on the ground were holding a net for Logeshwari to land safely, she crashed to the ground after hitting the sunshade.

According to reports, Logeswari was rushed to a private hospital in Thondamuthur, where she was administered first aid. She was referred to the state-run Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where she was declared "brought dead".

The police have sent the body for postmortem and the family has been informed.

Trainer Arumugan has been taken into custody by the police and a case for causing death due to negligence has been filed against him.

College authorities told the police that the drill was conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority of India (NDMAI).

Meanwhile, NDMA has clarified that Arumugam was not authorised to conduct such a drill.

WTF, I think her death is cause by her hitting her head against the cement roof of the ground floor, otherwise she sld be ok.  [:/]

If she had just jump outwards, she would have landed into the safety net. I guess she could not do it and the man actually pushed her, resulting in her losing balance.  [:/]

Ya, supposed to jump into safety net below. This one jump from building I first time hear.

It's like in some team building activity got confidence jump, but usually it is jumping into river or sea.  And should be wearing helmet and environment must be clear of other obstacles.

Why India needs this type of activity?

India has natural disasters too, including earthquakes. When fire breaks out in buildings and you are unable to escape through conventional routes, jumping off the building with a safety net below is one of the methods.

The only thing wrong is the manner the training was conducted. Similar training is done in Japan with zero fatality. So it's a matter of the trainer and not whether there is a need for such training.

This is not like pushing the cadet to the deep end of the pool with life guard on stand by..

Even that can go terribly wrong.

Indian police hunt for 5 accused of gang raping woman

MUMBAI (REUTERS) - Police in India said on Sunday (July 15) that they were looking for five men after a 35-year-old woman was gang raped and burned alive in the northern city of Sambhal, the latest registered rape in a country that sees hundreds of cases of sexual violence against women each year.

Varun Kumar, an inspector at the Rajpura police station in Sambhal in the state of Uttar Pradesh, said a case had been filed against the five men, who they said had barged into the woman's home at around 2.30am on Saturday and raped her, then burned her body and dumped it at a temple nearby.

More than 100 rape cases are reported each day in India.

The recent rapes of an eight-year-old girl and a teenager in two states ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party led to public protests, prompting the Indian government in April to introduce the death penalty for rape of girls under the age of 12 and increase the minimum punishment for those whose victims are under 16.

Crime statistics analysed by Reuters show that the number of reported rape cases in India had risen by 60 per cent since 2012 to around 40,000 in 2016, and the conviction rate for crimes against women was generally lower than for most other crimes.

The case in Sambhal comes after a three-year-old girl was reported to have been raped on Friday by a lifeguard at a school in Noida, a satellite city close to New Delhi.

Manoj Kumar Pant, an officer at the Surajpur police station in Noida, said on Sunday that the accused was arrested after the parents reported the incident on Friday.

The parents learnt about the rape when they took the girl for medical tests after she complained of pain, police said.

Ya ... even in schools we do rock climbing, abseiling got safety measures, clear of obstacles, safety harness, etc. This one just raw, jump down ordinary building with no safety. Very scary.

Must learn to study situation carefully and disobey unreasonable orders when required.

quite obvious that the bottom ledge is also dangerous right.

There is already a rape thread leh.

Why the school even allow it ?

The trainer is uncertified

The problem lies with the ppl over there. The joker just produce a letter to the school and he can do whatever he wants. The school admin never verify with the organisation he's from or do a background check on the trainer as well and the go ahead is given. The school should bear part of the blame.
