Haven't been to this thread much since i went on vacation in Dec...

Today is 初七人日。

Normally if 人日 falls on weekends, my mother will cook my - and now my kids' too - favourite porridge, 鱼生粥。

But since it's a weekday, she actually cooked it during the weekend first, so that we could take our time to eat our fill.

Have been eating it for almost 50 yr, and still love it. The fish & meat balls are nice, as are all the 'toppings' that have evolved over the years. Only the fried bee hoon and the cabbage are constant. Now the kids ask to add dried seaweed, crackers, etc. to it too. Oh, yes, the egg enhances the taste.

Sorry the photo doesn't show everything, as they are all 'layered' over.

Those wok heh smell cannot reproduce using normal house hold stove.

Exactly, which is why as I love to cook I am willing to invest in a home "commercial" kitchen.

The video above me frying rice is the centre of the 3 burners. This is what I call the asian burner. The one of the right will be the tze-char burner which I seldom use because there are only 2-3 person at home and most of the cooking is small portion so the centre burner is good enough. The right burner is western type design which also has a strong fire.

Wow. That is expensive for a haeker centre chicken rice. $5 can get set meal chicken rice that comes with a plate of vege or tau gay.

The one that one staff left them to set up shop next to them? Have tried that before...good and no need to queue.
