Log off, get a life and stop responding to work emails

Some management simply like to be kept informed. That means putting them on cc list. In fact, in my first job in MNC, one of my mistakes was to keep communication only to those that were working actively on an issue. Resulting in bosses not fully knowing what I was doing each day or my contributions. It affects individual visibility which has an impact during appraisal or promotion.

 

Attaching old e-mails is ks habit to "preserve evidence"!

Many bosses like to be kept informed and on cc list on everything de, whether it is small or big thing. Maybe this is the reason why bosses always have so many emails and very busy reading emails.

It is true. At my ex company 10 years ago, I average 400 emails a day. That's why I have no time for MCF then

When i was in purchasing, average 100 emails a day. Need to send minimum 3 emails out for every purchase request. So the replies will come in fast and furious.

 

Lucky now no more liao.

Guess only in purchasing and sales which deal with external parties, then will have such a huge volume of email received.

Most times it is the lack of knowledge of what is cc and to. When replying, some people just reply to all regardless if item only applicable to a few individuals.

First job of course needs to cc everyone to show effort, thought process and for boss to check and guide you along. More senior, boss don't need to see as only the outcome matters.

 

If you are senior and boss still ask you to keep him or her in the loop, time to pack up.

How to log off on the dot when my boss tells us our biggest boss work from 7am to 9pm to save the sinking ship. Hint hint liao.

Flexible hours. As long as she get the job done, I am fine. I don't belive in insisting staff to come by 9 and only go off after 6.

Fixed hours are of course very old-school. Some companies even require clock-in and out. What?

 

But the example you gave was pretty extreme. I have some colleagues who are extremely flexible too -- some say I'm one of them. :D

 

The way I think about it, there should be a "core" hours, say 10 to 4, so that discussions/meetings can happen. The second is workload. Flexible time all you want, but the workload should be roughly 40 hours a week.

 

Finally, you can tell the company/office culture by seeing the earliest and latest time they schedule normal meetings.

I believe in trust. Get the job done and I am fine with how they manage their time. My indo staff took it for granted and I had to place him on daily reporting for the past 2 mths. So far, so good...

I hate to be in CC.  Juz tell me the end results is enough.

 

All my CC email goes to a separate folder.  Got time then read.

Hardly have time to read all these CC emails.

dont take what those CEO, country MD said too seriously. Most of these are a marketing talk. In a public listed American  MNC, especially a tech company, their CEO and senior executives pay check are driven month to month, Q to Q by the Wall street casino. If their stock dont perform, the Anal-yst will come after their backside too.  The CEO will in turn drive everyone crazy to bring in more deals, cut more cost in order to protect his/her own interest.    If any employees fail to perform, the poor performer  may not even have a job in the following quarter.  So dont be naive to think that there is life in a public listed MNC. Especially American and next European. 

Also, working in these MNC, your contacts can be in Europe or in the US. You will get conf call with them ,lucky enough with Europe counterpart before 12 am our time. If it is US call, you get midnight or morning 6am call. Even within our APAC region, India and Australia time zone is nearly 6 hours apart, it is easy said than done to log off at 6pm.   Those who work in the MNC would know what life is about.

Last time in my first job in MNC, European, the boss allow us knock off early or flexi time if conference call expected to take place late in the night. But it was an ulu location, want to go where? Some more still single then, no family concerns. So give time off to attend to conference call also no use! [laugh]

If delete might as well ask them not to cc you. 

 

Why bother is there are many people in the company and in a company where many people come and go?

 

Just delete.
