Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts. Initially I hope it comes with full LED tail lights. After hearing the analogy I can accept non-LED.

Don't worry, you can always add the full LED tail light for below S$500.

Raving reviews on the new Camry hybrid from borneo on carbuyer and straitstimes Christopher Tan, you will need a premium account for that though. Wonder if sgcarmart will do a video review of the hybrid version as well.

SINGAPORE - The Toyota Camry has long been a roomy, comfortable and dependable sedan. Now, it is also fun to drive, thanks to its hybrid drivetrain, of all things.

Toyota hybrids are known for their fuel efficiency. But in the Camry, the presence of an electric motor does wonders for its driveability, making the car the most powerful Camry to date, although this is not fully reflected nor explained in the specs.

With more than 200Nm of instant torque from this adequate motor, the 2.5-litre full-size saloon responds to throttle input like a German turbocharged model.

As the revs rise, the petrol engine's peak torque of 221Nm kicks in at 3,600rpm and is sustained up to 5,200rpm. This medley works well because electric motors may be good at delivering instant torque but that tends to peter off at higher revs.

As such, the Toyota betrays no power gap at any speed, with the 0-100kmh dash completed in 8.5 seconds (it feels a tad quicker in real life). This is 0.7 second less than what its 2.5-litre non-hybrid sibling clocks. More surprisingly, this also pips its Lexus ES clone by 0.4 second.

The Camry Hybrid's chassis is suited to its new-found verve, with body movements well under control and a delectable firmness which sees to cornering tasks as brilliantly as any European performance sedan.

This is indeed unusual for a Camry, a car known for its feathery ride.

No wonder the test car is upholstered in red leather, with faux carbon trim and metallic pedals. You baulk at the somewhat loud interior, which you might expect in a sporty Audi or Jaguar. But when you set off, you realise the crimson cabin is apt.

The car's uncommon demeanour really makes it the most likeable Camry to date. In fact, Toyota could have given it a snazzier model name, like Camry GT. But knowing the Japanese manufacturer, it rarely oversells. In fact, it tends to undersell.

Together with the other established attributes of the model - such as good insulation, superior visibility and ample space - the Camry Hybrid's performance traits make it stand out from the crowd.

The sporty styling of the latest generation car, which was introduced 21/2 years ago, is also better suited to the hybrid. In fact, the subtle spoiler on the Elegance version is not entirely out of place.

While the Camry is now more attractive to the driving enthusiast, it is still appealing to growing families and ambitious executives. The car is still among the most spacious in its segment, with ample legroom in the rear.

Despite its battery taking some space in the boot, stowage capacity - at 524 litres - is still more than adequate.

Its reputation as a comfortable and complete car is reinforced with features such as ventilated seats (a bit noisy at the highest fan speed, but otherwise peachy), a head-up display so drivers need not glance down, a compact infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone-charging cradle and automatic high beam.

The infotainment screen deserves special mention. Although not as expansive as those found in European executive cars, it is very touch sensitive. This means you do not have to grapple with fancy haptic feedback screens and are less likely to leave smudges.

But what about the main proposition of a hybrid? Well, in this regard, the Camry Hybrid is more than satisfactory, averaging 5.2 litres/100km for this test drive. This is not too far from its stated 4.4 litres and better than expected for a car of its stature and performance.

So, that adage about not having your cake and eating it? It does not quite apply to the Camry Hybrid.
