Shanghai - mid range pricing; near subway; near shopping ctr

beijing - mid range pricing, near forbidden city (not beyond third ring) , near subway; near shopping ctr 

Not looking for backpacker hostel, Air B&B

What's your price range?

For Beijing, Forbidden City and 3rd ring road is a long distance le.  Not more than 2nd ring road is more reasonable.  The apartment i used to stay, Seasons Park, has service apartment.  It is next to East 2nd ring road.  Not more than 5 mins from Beijing Raffles Place.

shanghai - if near pedestrian street i stay Charms hotel. it is old hotel but good enough for me.

if want nice nice cheap hotel, can try Modena by Fraser , Putuo Shanghai. the shopping centre (nothing much except food) above the mrt has yidiandian bubble tea no Q 😂

 

Beijing - i stayed Swissotel Beijing Hong Kong Macau Centre. Mrt outside nia

If you want try something different, it's A hotel. Below a stadium and with hot tub 😄

Ascott Raffles City is on top of DongZhiMen MRT station.  It is the end of famous 簋街.

Direct train to Beijing International Airport (Not Daixing Airport)
