Don't see any Kaohsiung thread so starting one.

Anyone been there recently? Any recommendations? Hotels?

Can take the MRT from airport to town?

Thanks.

never been there but I know their train network is not as good as Taipei, quite limited. Fortunately there is a line from airport to city.

From my previous trips to Kaohsiung,

1) Dragon and Tiger pagoda

2) Liu He night market

3) Cingqing beach and lighthouse

4) Shopping mall with Hello Kitty ferris wheel on the roof

5) Chen Kaishi tunnel/bunker

6) Love river, not family-friendly at night

7) Sogo shopping centre

8) Main train station

went there on a group tour many years back … stayed at Kaohsiung Kingdom Hotel.

worst hotel I have ever stayed before. room was very small and towels were damp.

*pls don't say 一分钱一分货 ... as this was a group package and the other hotels were still ok.

It’s ok, going there for 3 days only.

Been to Taipei twice so thought of going to a new city there.

Plus giving prayers to a friend who passed away long ago.

Many many years ago my 1st and only group tour was to Taiwan, and the worst hotel was also in Kaohsiung.

Overall impression was also the worst for all the city I had visited before in TW all holiday and business trip.

Kaohsiung for me was better than expected.

People are nice and food was good and cheap.

More to relax rather than rushing around to sight seeing

Most memorable was having a dinner at a restaurant and saw their local beer. Ordered the beer and comes with a cute small glass. Later i asked the owner if I may buy a glass from him. He did not say much. Later when we paid up, he came with 2 boxes and told it was a gift from them. There are 12 new glasses inside. I was embarassed to say the least. They refused to collect any payment. The glasses were not your free glasses from the brewery but their own.

Now still have lots of SAF men there ah? Donkey years ago i indeed went there as SAF man. Lol.

Not sure for Army side. But Navy side, i know there are three trips to KH every year. One is naval exercise with 10 days shore leave. The other is midshipman training on their way to Japan. And the third is reservist training supporting the Army.
