SINGAPORE - From Dec 17, commuters in Joo Koon and Marina Downtown can hail a public bus the way they hail a private-hire ride.

As part of a six-month trial, they will be able to book an SBS Transit service via a phone app, requesting pick-ups and drop-offs at any bus stop within the two areas.

The service will be available on weekdays, excluding public holidays, from 11am to 3pm. On weeknights, it will run from 8.30pm to 11.30pm in Joo Koon and until 11.45pm in Marina Downtown .

The fare will be based on a distance of 3.2km, which is currently 77 cents for adult fare card, and 83 cents from Dec 29 after the latest fare revision. Commuters will be issued an e-boarding pass once a booking is successful.

They pay for their ride the usual way – by tapping their ez-link card.

And from Jan 4, another on-demand bus service will be available from the central business district to Bedok and Tampines. SMRT will ply this service on Fridays, Saturdays and eve of public holidays from 11.30pm to 2am.

Users will pay a flat fare of $4.50.

I watched the news, it says no. Will bring u directly to the bus stop that u chose. It will not go round and round. However boarding and drop off only at bus stops. Also bus driver will drive according to gps guide. So if got other passengers to pickup, may detour a little bit.

Haa, what i meant is the detour of picking up different passengers. Lets say the bus pick you up first, then there are another 5 passengers also requested for the bus, so the bus would need to detour to different 5 locations lo. So it is the same like the normal bus service which stops along the bus route at bus-stop to drop and pick up passengers. Lol.

Here's a look at more information about the service:

Q: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF ON-DEMAND BUSES?

A: Running normal scheduled buses is not always efficient, especially during off-peak hours. On-demand buses allow operators to be more efficient, as buses are deployed only when there is demand.

Q: WHERE ELSE ARE ON-DEMAND BUSES USED?

A: American cities such as New York, Washington DC and Chicago have such a service. New Zealand and Australia have also started introducing it, as has Berlin, Germany.

Helsinki in Finland was among the first to introduce the service - called Kutsuplus -but it was later ceased because it was not sustainable without huge government subsidies.

Q: WHAT TYPE OF BUSES WILL BE USED IN THE SIX-MONTH TRIAL?

A: Normal full-size single-deck buses. Essentially, buses which are from the pared down scheduled services will be deployed as on-demand buses.

Q: IS THIS THE FIRST OF SUCH SERVICE IN SINGAPORE?

A: Not really. There is Beeline, a crowdsourced shuttle bus service introduced in 2015; GrabShuttle (a bus-pooling service powered by Beeline); GrabShuttle Plus, a dynamic model that is closest to what Swat and Via are rolling out during the trial; and ShareTransport City Bus, a bus-pooling service.

Q: HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH TO TAKE - AN ON-DEMAND BUS OR A NORMAL SCHEDULED BUS?

A: The on-demand bus apps - either BusGo or BusNow - will advise you. If you are not in a hurry, the normal bus arrival apps will let you know when the next scheduled bus will be available.

Q: IF THERE ARE, SAY, FOUR OF US TRAVELLING IN A GROUP, SHOULD WE TAKE AN ON-DEMAND BUS OR A CAB?

A: It depends. On weekdays, an on-demand bus is still cheaper, for now. But for the weekend night service which costs $4.50 per commuter, a taxi may not cost much more, especially if you are going to the same place.

Q: WHICH IS FASTER - AN ON-DEMAND BUS OR A SCHEDULED BUS?

A: Again, it depends. The app will advise you on which is the best option. In time, if on-demand buses take off, scheduled buses may be scaled back more aggressively. In that case, an on-demand bus would probably be faster.
