The Galaxy Fold, unveiled at a San Francisco event, serves as a smartphone with a 4.6-inch display and unfolds to become a tablet of 7.3 inches.

SAN FRANCISCO: Seeking to rev up demand in the slumping smartphone market, Samsung on Wednesday (Feb 20) unveiled a folding handset, becoming the first major manufacturer to offer the feature.

The South Korean giant also appeared to get the jump on rivals by announcing the first device for fifth-generation, or 5G wireless networks, one of four versions of its flagship smartphone, while stepping up its efforts in artificial intelligence and wearables.

The Galaxy Fold, unveiled at a San Francisco event, serves as a smartphone with a 4.6-inch display and unfolds to become a tablet of 7.3 inches.

"We are giving you a device that doesn't just define a new category, it defies category," said Samsung's Justin Denison at the event.

The Fold will be available on Apr 26 starting at US$1,980, the company said.

Samsung also announced its new Galaxy S10 handset, upgrading its current line of flagship handsets including one 5G device, getting a jump on rivals expected to make similar announcements at next week's Mobile World Congress.

related but this is specific.....and it can run the course

and since you think you are like a mod to decide what and who goes where?

know your place.

on that note, you watch your presence as there has been this trend to ALWAYS bring politics in every bloody thread.  I am watching you tightly and one of the RULES we enforce is no politics.

Although we have laxed, DOES NOT mean it's OK!

so stop your 'blame PAP' nonsense in EVERY thread you set your body odor in!

I think the phone makers are running dry when it comes to ideas.

What good does a folded phone do. Yes, it's more compact but at the same time it becomes very thick.

Then there's reverse charging....I can't figure out what this is good for? Charging other ppl's phone? For what?

Few things that make me NOT considering this Galaxy Fold for now:

- The phone is going to be thick, probably >12mm when folded (no official specs on it dimensions as of current)

- The 4.6" display (when folded) with 21:9 screen ratio is going to be smaller than iPhone 6 with 16:9 4.7" display

- More wear and tear expected with foldable screen (you can't defy physics)

- Price at US$1,980 it is expected to cost closer to S$3K when launch here, might as well as buy a Win10 tablet and keep the change

For now, I think the 7.2" Mate 20X (can be had for <$900 without contract) is the best of both world, at least for me. [nod]
