But why would China want another airline?

Especially one so deep in racial politics.

My guess it is probably part of China's economy 'invasion'. Malaysia may find themselves owing China too much debt and will allow china freer access to their natural resources.

To cut a long story short; ask for offset here offset there, tahan until next GE, pass the problem to the next govt when PH gets kicked out, current cronies walk away w a bundle from these offsets.

And then throw smoke bomb n blame Sg for something ridiculous like SQ stealing their profitable customers, SQ sabo them, etc and no one remembers the offsets....

Malaysia regulator fears airline expansion curbs after FAA downgrade

China, South Korea and Japan all stopped Thailand-based airlines from flying charters and new routes because of safety concerns raised by the International Civil Aviation Organization, which was followed by the FAA downgrade.

MAVCOM Chief Operating Officer Azmir Zain said Malaysian carriers could lose as much as 4 billion ringgit (US$966 million), or 24 per cent of their revenue a year, if China, Japan and South Korea took the same restrictive steps against them.

Malaysia's airline industry is dominated by state-owned Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia Group Bhd and its long-haul arm AirAsia X Bhd .

KUALA LUMPUR (REUTERS) - Privately held Golden Skies Ventures (GSV) has made a US$2.5 billion (S$3.58 billion) offer to fully take over the holding company of ailing state carrier Malaysia Airlines, with financing from a European bank, its executives told Reuters on Monday (April 6).

Malaysian firm GSV made the proposal a month ago, as airlines around the world were hammered by travel restrictions following the coronavirus pandemic.

"(We have secured) in excess of US$2.5 billion from the bank. We will take about three to four months to get the long-term financing," chief executive Shahril Lamin told Reuters in a phone interview.

Malaysia Airlines and Khazanah in talks with govt seeking more funds

Quote

[KUALA LUMPUR] Malaysia Airlines and sole owner Khazanah Nasional, the country's sovereign wealth fund, are in talks with the government seeking additional funds to help the airline pull through the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Edge weekly.

The weekly reported on Saturday that Malaysia Airlines declined to disclose the amount sought, and said it was difficult to ascertain the immediate amount of funding required to keep the carrier operating as the outbreak situation continues to evolve.

The Malaysian government has been seeking a strategic partner for its financially ailing national airline, which has struggled to recover from two tragedies in 2014 - the mysterious disappearance of flight MH370 and the shooting down of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine.

"We are working closely with our (sole) shareholder, Khazanah, and the government on the financial support needed to sustain Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) through this crisis," a spokesman for the airline said, according to The Edge.

Malaysia Airlines-AirAsia merger an option to save them: Minister

Quote

KUALA LUMPUR • Merging money-losing state carrier Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) with budget airline AirAsia Group Berhad is one of the options to "save" them as the Covid-19 crisis batters the aviation industry, Malaysia's second-most senior minister said yesterday.

The pandemic that has killed at least 146,000 people around the world has led to lockdowns in many countries, brought air travel to a virtual halt and left airlines battling for survival.

Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, Malaysia's Minister of International Trade and Industry and the government's designated second-in-command, said deliberations would soon take place on various options to help out the country's airline industry.
