My point is that the main thrust of OBOR has close to nothing to do with Singapore, to put it mildly, despite whatever positive spin they want to put it.

We are there merely as observers. We don't need any of this infrastructure building that the chinese want to do.

As such, during such a forum, we are there as a bit part.

think we were purposely left out from the OBOR agreement to punish us for being cosy with USA....eventhough we deny but the whole world knows we are the only US ally in this region and we stood out like a sore thumb......die if we do and die if we dont....

No. When OBOR was announced. I know we have nothing much to do with it.

OBOR is simply put a way to put Chinese excess industrial capacity into play with extending Chinese financing, Chinese engineering, Chinese systems into these countries that need it. And its all built largely by chinese workers!

The locals being hired are at best support staff. Which is something that mahathir was complaining (rightly so).

So big brother builds u something that he lends u money for and which he will collect interest and u pay him back. But your country benefits minimally from it. Other than the fact that u cant build it as fast and efficiently as him due to the mass number of trained construction workers he already has.

While we do use Chinese companies when it's cost efficient, like eg our mrt trains r built by prc jap joint venture. Sg or sg companies have a limited to zero role to play in all these.

Similarly what do South korea, Japan, hk and other Asian developed economies have to do in OBOR? Zero.

Hence our "involvement" is really minimal and likely limited to the KL-SIN HSR part which is being postponed anyway.

One thing that mahathirs old man attitude has done is allow Malaysia to renegotiate the OBOR projects with China.

Credit is due here to his negotiation tactic haha.

But the Chinese have a long memory and they won't forget this slight in the future. Even though for now, they have to play nice. Cos other countries in Africa and Asia are looking at how things play out between them.

From what i remembered the original OBOR had us included in the road map but that idea was scrapped and Malaysia given the ECRL and port upgrade. If you read properly the current ECRL agreement is a downgrade to what was initially agreed with less stop and minus an underground section that would have been an important stage that linked certain cities which will be beneficial in the future.

Yup Singapore went from being a part of the silk route.. benefiting from it..

To being a red dot to be isolated and bypassed by the silk route.

History knows maritime states that disappeared after getting bypassed.

Because we were closer to US and they were using our airbases to spy on China eventhough we said we were neutral. And not helped by the international gaffe by our own we were then sidelined and the OBOR route changed! Not saying i supports China though as many countries have learned that having a loan with China could be a money-trap......you could be indebted for a very long time.

Its in our history bro.....we were onced called pulau hujung, demised, changed name to Temasek, attacked and demised, change name to Singapura then Singapore.......just waiting for the date of the next demise and if the OBOR, the Kra Canal and ECRL bears fruit.....we will be deep in trouble and the dates.........only havent choise the year oni!

Well. The onus is on us to be a hyperefficient transshipment port then.

From what I understand of the shipping industry. Whether ERCL or not, doesn't really bother us one bit actually.

Kra canal. Lol. Look at who is in charge of Thailand... I will be long dead and this Kra canal will never be built.

A good article and analysis. Malaysia went off course since the 70s when Needs-based aid schemes became Race-based aid schemes, no thanks to chauvinists - on all sides too. Every politician championed their own community as a priority because given the simple minded electorate, it was the only way to ensure their political survival. They are still trapped in this mode of operation until today.

Dr Mahathir’s special media adviser Datuk A. Kadir Jasin called upon the authorities to probe taxes paid by Mados Sdn Bhd, a company believed to be linked to the Johor royalty.

He said that new Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador should reopen some "frozen" and "closed" investigation papers but did not elaborate.

He also said the Inland Revenue Board should probe Mados. The company is said to be owned by the Johor royal family.

"The little boy has asked us to do 110%, but I think 50% is enough," Datuk Kadir wrote in a Facebook post on May 6.

His post came after Dr Mahathir said the Crown Prince of Johor is a "little boy who does not know anything".

Mr Kadir also warned that "Little Boy" is like the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945.

"It is very dangerous although it is small and does not know anything. So we have to do something, not just talking," he said.

Guess a good place to start is actually this media adviser guy's financial status and wealth, to be fair. Otherwise, it will be just talking too.

Hehe....Sometimes they treat the small boy's father as invisible and stupid as well, not having passed down anything worth knowing to his future heir and Johore's next Sultan.

Can't whack the father so whack the son. Should apply the same method to the sons of Dr M too. Must be fair what.
