Operating Exhaust [updated 2019]

Hi guys,

I have been searching for threads regarding modding exhausts but couldnt find the info i needed. As such, started this new thread here.

My bro-in-law bought a Perodua Myvi (previous gen) through a parallel importer some time back and is looking to zhng the exhaust to sound more bassy (something along the lines of the Imprezas in the early 2000s) but couldnt find any LTA approved exhausts after asking around.

So we went to Skyrex Exhausts recently. They mentioned they can customize the exhausts to fit the car. The actual words they used were "use stock exhausts operate". They didnt elaborate much as we visited them close to their closing timing.

Can anyone here provide some wisdom on what exactly do they mean and if its street legal?

{PS: Sorry for asking such a noob question, am new to this whole car mod-ing game and thank you in advance!}

Don't waste time. Change to a proper exhaust.

That again it's a Myvi, all the more don't waste time and money.

Take the money and treat the family to a good meal.

Haha its not that bad right? I have seen Myvis speed down mountain roads in M'sia faster than Porsches and Audis machiam Initial D.

Putting the topic of Myvi aside and for the sake of knowledge, care to share what is operating the exhausts?

If you have been searching the threads in MCF, you would have noticed there are a couple of old threads on exhaust modification, including whether such modifications are legal or not.

Hope this helps, but quite frankly...Don’t waste time.

Its not about the size of the exhaust but the size of the testicles in that case.

Operating the exhaust means to remove the internal baffles and piping in the (mistaken) hope that it would somehow turn your cut-rate economy hatch into an exotic-car beater.

All it does it remove your low end torque and make your car louder.

Ahh no wonder they said operate the stock exhausts because it will look no diff from the original.

Then again, confirm cannot pass inspection. The noise and the hollow muffler (if the inspector decides to knock) is a dead giveaway.

Thanks for the explanation!

If an "operation" is that effective, car manufacturer would have thought of it moonlight years ago.

A classic case of 识少少 扮代表

Sometime it is the case of regulation. Like catback which rob power but it is needed for environmental protection.

There are 2 functions for the exhaust muffler..

1.  Reduce noise and pollution

2.  Redirect the back pressure of the internal combustion engine back toward the engine or around an internal chamber.

If you remove the muffler or "operate" to remove the internal structural to make it "straight thru", engine that are designed with a certain amount of exhaust resistance (back pressure), performance of the car will suffer.

It is best to change the entire exhaust system instead of "operating" it.... anyway since both ways are illegal, then go for a more reliable method.  Even "operating" may be much cheaper but comparing with the value of the car, I think better pay more for a proper set up.

My 5 cents opinion.

ya, agree.

Keep the original exhaust in storeroom, can use it if 1) kenna caught 2) swap for inspections.

Operate liao, if kenna discovered ....... then have to get new one. Its not cheap + may not have stock.

Not much difference in cost anyway

absolutely right.

thats y u see alot of small cc cars zing their exhaust until very loud.

but their pick up very slow, infact slower then when using stock ..

its not so simple u install a racing exhaust your car gain power.

if not those professional car modifiers shop wont be charging so high.

second hamburger. dont waste time and money and let idiots who have no inkling of engine exhaust design to destroy the power and fuel economy of the engine.

exhaust specialist shop in singapore? Please... all they do is butcher the exhaust and tell you if there is power loss its like that one.

How can any local exhaust shop without any dyno and exhaust gas flow meters know what the hell they are doing. use butt feel i also know.
