North South Line

NSL will have 2 new stations, Brickland and Sungei Kadut. The new Brickland station will be located between CCK and Bukit Gombak stations. It will benefit people living in Keat Hong, Bukit Batok West and Pavilion Park, as well the Brickland district in the upcoming Tengah town.

The new Sungei Kadut station will be located between Yew Tee and Kranji stations. It will be an interchange station that will also connect to the Downtown Line (DTL). LTA explained that this will be achieved by extending the DTL beyond Bukit Panjang station to serve Yew Tee and Choa Chu Kang.

The 2 stations will be ready by mid-2030.

Thomson East Coast Line

TEL will extended to serve the upcoming Changi Airport Terminal 5, as well as a new Sungei Bedok station. Set to be completed by 2040, the stretch between Tanah Merah and Changi Airport, which is currently on the East-West Line, will be converted to the TEL.

The LTA also announced a feasibility study to assess whether a new rail line should be built to supplement transport options in the north and northeast regions, and connect these regions to the south.

This line would connect the upcoming Woodlands North Coast residential development to the Greater Southern Waterfront, which takes over the site of the Pasir Panjang and City port terminals, possibly serving residents in Sembawang, Sengkang, Serangoon North, Whampoa and Kallang along the way.

This line could also link the new Seletar Airport passenger terminal to the MRT network, adding much needed public transport options to and from the airport, although concrete plans have not been made as yet.

The study is set to begin sometime soon and will take at least a year to be completed.

If the new line gets the go-ahead, there is a chance it could be operational as soon as 2040.

Measuring roughly 30km, it would also bring the total length of the rail network here close to 400km by the time it is completed.

LTA will assess the demand, station locations and implementation timeline of the line, as well as whether it will be feasible for it to pass through the Lower Seletar Reservoir.

When completed, the line could serve more than 400,000 households and commuters in the northern region would have their travel time to the city centre cut by 40 minutes, the report added.

11 MRT stations along Thomson-East Coast Line on track to open by end of the year: LTA

Eleven new stations along the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), including Orchard, Great World and Maxwell, are on track to open to the public by the end of the year. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it officially handed over the stations to transport operator SMRT on Wednesday (Aug 17).

"This milestone marks the completion of all civil and structural works, as well as our systems integration and testing activities, for our TEL3," LTA said in a Facebook post.

"With the handover, SMRT will carry out operational testing over the next few months to prepare 11 of the stations for welcoming commuters for passenger service by the end of this year."

The 11 stations, which come under stage 3 of the TEL, run from Stevens to Gardens by the Bay. Authorities previously said passenger service is expected to start in the second half of the year. LTA said commuters taking the MRT directly from Springleaf to Great World City, for instance, can save more than 40 per cent in travel time compared to a 60-minute journey by bus and train.

These 11 new MRT stations along TEL not bad, got station nearer to the Gardens by the Bay, unlike current Bayfront MRT, walk to Gardens by the Bay quite a distance.

Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Feasibility Study on New MRT Line Serving North and North-East Regions

08 May 2023In Parliament

Assoc Prof Jamus Jerome Lim asked the Minister for Transport whether he can provide an update on the feasibility study commissioned for a new MRT line serving the north and north-east regions, which is separate from the North-South Line (NSL) and Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and running through Sengkang West, as announced in the Land Transport Master Plan 2040.

Reply by Minister for Transport S Iswaran:

1.     Rail projects are major and complex public investments. A comprehensive range of factors is assessed before any decision is made to build a new rail line, including existing and future land use developments along the corridor, existing public transport options, and engineering considerations. Studies by the Land Transport Authority are ongoing, and updates will be provided when ready.
