There is ONLY one possibility, to go ahead with the satellite based ERP - is to collect fees, nothing less

Present ERP gantry maybe 25-30 years old, just like the PSA cranes tower, or big birds as some called it ( to lift 20 /40 foot containers ) to be sold to other countries, meaning Singapore can afford brand new cranes of big birds for operation. likewise Govt is going ahead with Satellite based ERP, intention is to tell the world how " RED DOT " can be advanced stage of development  . . . I will clap clap for them nia, the citizens will suffer more are the motorists in the long run.

This is outdated liao.

Currently, our gantry can collect ERP from Foreign Car via photo recognition.  Why do we need GPS based ERP?

Unless it is for distance based charging.

Like the video clip above, I'm equally opposed to the whole GPS location tracking aspect.

Sure, the entire island is already under 24/7 electronic mass surveillance & that's great certainly for law and order enforcement.

But transmitting your own car's GPS coordinates nonstop whenever the car moves, all neatly linked to your car registration, is far beyond law enforcement. It require zero investigative motive or effort to detail everything your car has been doing, for anyone gaining access to the data.

Unless you commit a crime, it's noone's business how you choose to use your own car.

whoever accepted the tender must be fired!

they can always re-tender to demand for small, sleek and smarter system

but as many pointed out ... they might have screw up the tender specs!

want big display, want touchscreen, want heat ressistant, etc ... [mad]

Not surprising to those who had been playing with GPS and understand how RF and GPS Work. In Singapore environment, it's a lot more challenging to get accurate GPS Positioning, To name a few factors: concrete jungle, cloudy sky and heavy rain. GPS work best in open area with clear sky environment.  I had been playing with GPS since 2001.

Therefore to overcome those factors which affect the GPS positioning, more work need to be done not only on the equipment used to received the GPS but also to reduce the effect of those factors, works need to be done to the the environment for example, inside the tunnel, underground and inside building.

question is how did such design pass the approval of LTA? Did they just blindly accept and sign?

Did they go through any focus groups to gain POV?

Before anyone can answer your 1st question, does anyone know what's LTA RFP for this project?

none done.

LTA spent 18 months doing technical evaluation before award tender, but couldn't afford/be bothered to do FGD, user research/testing

so we just have to suck thumb and accept that 3 piece junk? imagine u got a new fancy car with a beautiful console/dashboard and u stick that piece of sh*t onto it.

Not just new fancy or high end cars. Smaller cars will also have  more issues - intrudes into the space of front passenger and more obstruction of driver's view, and these inconveniences and hazards are in addition to the fugly design of the OBUs that spoils the looks of all cars
