Liverpool Football Club - It is time to end the 30 year wait

I think there was a period in his career that he almost has no club. His agent even had to make a glossy brochure about him just to market him. I mean he is Michael Owen, does he actually even need a marketing brochure? Can tell how desperate his marketing agent wants to find a club for him.

Then Man U came along, and he took it. I think he just wants a club to relaunch his career after all his injuries.

Yes, his game was based primarily on his superb pace, and i remember reading that he was top scorer for the world cup equivalent for a few age groups. And of course in the real world cup, his wonder goal against argentina announced his arrival. If Beckham had kept his cool, and if England had progressed, i'm pretty sure that his reputation would have soared even higher. Ballon de Or winner at age of 22...

But when his injuries robbed him of the pace, his one-dimensional play was gone... We don't like him for quitting Pool, but his best years were over when he left at 25... In a sense, he gave his best to Pool, and came out quite battered... Not sure if it was because he was overused at a young age and thus did not have the longevity (just look at Ryan Giggs for comparison) like some others, and so found himself in the desperate situation late on...

to date I can still remember him holding the white jersey declaring playing for the best or bigger club ..something along that line. love became hate likea snatch of a fingers.

Yes, that was ill-advised, or was he just plain stupid even at that age (no longer young)...

I remembered in the early years of his career, there was some little controversy, and his father came out to defend him, and said that it's more important that owen be a good person than be a good footballer. And he didn't have any negative news until quitting Pool, in the process earning him support both for his goal-scoring prowess, as well as his childish and clean look. I am aware that a lot of school girls became his fan [laugh]

If quitting Pool was bad, signing for Utd was really worse, and saying what he did, was the nail in the coffin.

i don't think Paul Ince is as hated by Utd fans, when he played for Pool.

Strong indications, no major signings will be incoming...

yup. seems like the plan is to retain the squad, n build on youngsters to ensure succession.

but i feel it will b super naive if the club thinks that is enough. surely at least 2 positions need good n ready reinforcement now.

i agree. It's naive to say that things will be the same next year.

And to bank on injured players coming back ... then obviously they can be injured again.

And joe gomez has been pretty unimpressive in the LB position in terms of going forward. He offers nothing. Milner already don't offer much, and gomez is even worse. zero attacking output.

A specialist LB will probably be better. Robertson got a few muscle injuries this year.

It's not like joe gomez cant cover for matip/lovren/vvd as well...

Especially with such intensity in the games required nowadays.

Gomez unimpressive at LB or RB is an understatement.

we lost quite a few games when he played there.

yes...gomez is not a fullback. he can cover for CB. they need to get a LB. n also a winger. origi shouldnt b used as a backup winger. so a cover for mane n salah is definitely needed.

yeah. he's not a LB/RB.

Our offence is highly dependent on RB and LB also.

So this insistence that LB is settled cos there's gomez and Milner is ...

Even as distrusted as moreno was, he still played 4 games. If a LB deputy was more trusted, i would expect him to start ten games easily for a long season?

Yes it's great that the team is settled, no major players leaving is ...

Who's TAA's deputy? He missed some games and Milner was at best average there.

I feel Pool should leverage on the recent UCL title and momentum to capture some big names. This is the best time to convince them to move

Using back the same squad will also make them quite predictable to the competitive teams....adding a few new faces will add some complexity for the opposite teams to analyse

Agree...

The 2 full backs had contributed more than 20 assists in the recently-ended season. I don't know how these can be replicated if the 2 regulars are not playing. We need back-ups. The problem is of course, most decent players will want to be starting and will not want to be back-ups... Clyne is a good example. Even Moreno also looking for regular starts...

how do the other teams do it huh?

Actually it's a bit quite risky for Pool. If the first choice goalie/defence/striking trio are not playing, the team dynamic changes dramatically, and so could results. The front three at least we see origi (as did Gini) stepping up and scoring, in the final 2 UCL matches. But we've seen many times that once there are changes to the front three, they simply don't click. We need players who can slot in seamlessly and play the same style, or if not, the collective must be able to adapt and still pose similar goal threat with different style of play...

Next month will be an acid test. Mane, Salah and Firmino had played in World Cup this time last year, so had a shortened vacation, then the season past stretched till June, after which they went to Copa and Afcon... At least Firmino and Salah has started their breaks. Mane is still progressing and if Senegal goes all the way, then Mane will have gone a really long time without a long break. Dunno can tahan or not...

And if they are all given extended breaks, then the beginning of the season will be looking at either the back-ups, or the half-fit starters will have to struggle through...

I read that the strategy is to retain old players, so save on $$, and then wait to see whether there's any "Transformers" who might be available, in which case they will have enough $$ to splash the cash.

They use Transformers to describe players who can transform the team, like VVD and Allison...

If this is true, then hopefully can find a creative midfielder.

Yeap, a creative attacking midfielder is very much needed.

clear focus from Klopp in the decision not to invest heavily in new players is due to the opportunities he wants to give to the youth players.  also reinforced by his transfer choices in this window so far - 16 and 17 yr olds only.

Brewster seems like a Origi successor and may even give him a good run for his money this season, albeit Origi is still likel to be a squad player.
