Pep rarely gives too much respect to the opposition.  But he was probably too respectful with Klopp and started with both Rodri and Gundogan, both playing the DM role.

Tactically, the team could have over defended by pulling too many players deep into its own half.  The 1st goal was cos Pool was the on the counter and a poor cross put into the box by Mane. Gundogan, normally a calm passer of the ball, opted not to pass but to clear the ball out of the box in the first instance.  With the DMs so deep, Fabino was able to picked up the ball and had the luxury to set himself up for a full and clear strike on the ball.

We seldom see Pep so winded up during a game. Usually even if they concede the 1st goal or get a decision against them, he wont be so animated. But at Anfield, he was actually irritated with everything thrown at the team.

Yes the pressure is getting to him.

As a manager he should hide his feelings and not let his players see that Pool is getting to him.

The worse thing he can do is talk non stop about Pool.

He should pretend he is not even thinking about Liverpool.

Football is all about psychology and Shankly knew all about this.

And so does Kloop.

Is Klopp counter press new to Liverpool?

I think the answer is no.

I remember Ian Rush playing with Kenny Dalglish and Rushie always track back and close down defenders when they had the ball.

When the opposition had the ball in midfield Rush will always come from behind the player and try to steal the ball.

When Rush played with Fowler he always told him close the defender down.

When Suarez played with Coutinho he also always told him close the defender down.

Looking at Pool in the 80s they used to have 3 or 4 players close down the opposition player with the ball to regain possession as soon as they lost it.

definitely not new.  Even during the days of Gerard Houiller, Rafa and BR, there have always been the practice of pressing from the front.

However, the gen-pressing from Klopp is definitely at a different level altogether. The entire team hunts like a pack of wolves systematically.  Typical possession footballing teams like City and Barca can't live with such pressing and coughs up possession over and over again when they come to anfield.

Klopp has publicly promised not to talk about MC's tactical fouls.

He later played down this talk as unnecessary.

What a brilliant piece of counter mind game.

Liverpool 'buy Brendan Rodgers' £3.75m house and rent it to Jurgen Klopp for free'

Klopp had been renting the property from his predecessor Rodgers - now Liverpool have bought it to reward manager for guiding Reds back to top of world game.

Maybe der Chef was right after all in not needing to sign a backup for front 3 this season. As gini was there all along.

Gini scored 2 against brace in the CL home semi

Gini just scored a hat trick against lowly Estonia

He can cover for front 3 as we hv a glut of good mid.

With the Ox replacing Salah, the formation will probably be 4-3-3 with Firmino/Mane alternating on the wings and Ox in centre with the shape morphing into a diamond depending on which attacking or defending phase the players are in. Of course other positional variations are possible. Just my passing thoughts.

Looking forward to this interesting match with the only positive result in mind.
