Its design is as timeless as the VW beetle, Mini Cooper and Landrover Defender.

2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 set to bare its 577-horsepower heart in Geneva

https://www.autoblog.com/2018/02/13/2019-mercedes-amg-g63-reveal-geneva/

Last month's Detroit Auto Show saw the debut of the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Few vehicles have well and truly earned the term "all-new" like the G-Wagen, as this was the first full redesign since it was introduced in 1979. As excited as we are for the new G500, what many people have been waiting for is the latest model from Affalterbach, the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63. It promises to be more comfortable, fuel efficient and better driving than ever, but we just hope it's nearly as charming.

At the heart of every AMG is a big, meaty engine. In this case, it's a variant of the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that's found in everything from the AMG GT R to the S560. In this guise, the engine makes 577 horsepower and an axis-shifting 621 pound-feet of torque, the latter available 2,500 to 3,500 rpm. Like with the other variants, the turbochargers are in the middle of the engine's V, a move that helps them spool faster. Cylinder deactivation helps improve fuel economy.

Power is sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic. The 4Matic all-wheel drive system has a 40:60 front to rear torque split, ensuring that some amount of wheel spin should be possible. For those concerned, take comfort in knowing that there are still three locking differentials.

The G63 will hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, 0.9 seconds quicker than the old model. Top speed is limited to 137 mph. Checking the box for the Driver's Package raised the limit to 149 mph, impressive for such a brick-shaped object.

It wouldn't be an AMG-tuned model if there wasn't some work done to the suspension and steering. We love it for its charm, but frankly the outgoing model was one of the absolute worst-handling vehicles on the market. The new model ditches the solid front axle in favor of an independent setup. There's a five-link setup in the rear with coil springs all around. Every AMG gets adaptive dampers with three preset modes, Comfort, Sport and Sport+. In total there are five on-road settings and three more for off-roading.

The steering system now uses a variable ratio and speed sensitive rack. AMG says feedback improved, but it's not hard to move up from what was already available. Like the suspension, the steering has both Comfort and Sport modes that adjust the wheel's weight.

Like the G500, the G63 won't be mistaken for anything else but a G-Class. Like the Jeep Wrangler, the design has become too ingrained in the minds of consumers to stray too far away. The G63 gets the traditional AMG treatment, namely larger wheels, more chrome and a more aggressive front bumper. The grill gets a slightly rounded shape, inspired by the one on the AMG GT R. The G-Wagen's sweet side-exit exhaust remains, ensuring the V8's exhaust note will continue to aggravate your neighborhood.

Other AMG additions include "V8 BITURBO" badges on the fenders, flared wheel arches, red brake calipers and available 22-inch wheels. An AMG Night package adds dark tinted headlights, taillights, turn signals and rear glass. It also adds Obsidian Black paint on the mirrors, spare wheel ring and bumpers. Finally, the package includes either 21- or 22-inch matte-black wheels. For those who get to their dealers early, there's an Edition 1 package. It comes with Designo Night Black Magno paint with Graphite Grey stripes. The mirror caps get red stripes.

nside, the G63 gets about every touch and nicety Mercedes-Benz has to offer. There's metal, leather and carbon fiber covering nearly every interior surface. An optional Widescreen Cockpit packs two 12.3-inch displays in front of the driver, displaying a huge, digital instrument cluster. The interior of the Edition 1 models get red stitching on the dashboard, center console, door panels and rear seats. The front seats are done in black and red nappa leather with diamond stitching.

Pricing hasn't been announced, but the G63 will make its full debut on March 6 at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class gets brighter with new Stainless Steel Package

https://www.4wheelsnews.com/auto/2019-mercedes-benz-g-class-stainless-steel-package-38788.html

2019-mercedes-benz-g-class-stainless-ste

When the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class was unleashed at the 2018 Detroit Motor Show, the rugged yet luxurious SUV revealed several updates both inside and outside. Since then, Mercedes-Benz has been unveiling the G-Class in different trims and packages like the Night Package and the menacing AMG Edition 1. Now, Mercedes is offering a new package laden with shiny metal accents – the new Stainless Steel Package.

Just like its name indicates, the Stainless Steel package has a number of added elements made in this material. For instance, the package adds elements to the G-Class like protective door strips, rear bumper accents, grooved rear bumper protection, running boards, sill protectors as well as spare tire carrier and three-dimensional star done in stainless steel. This package is in contrast with the Night Package that adds a number of dark details to the new G-Class.

The new G-Class is already an SUV that stands out from the crowd, but exterior packages like the AMG Edition 1, Night Package and the newly unveiled Stainless Steel Package makes the luxurious utility model more distinct than before.

According to the Mercedes-Benz Passion blog, the Stainless Steel package is already fitted as standard on the AMG G 63. However, for the rest of the members of the G-Class, the Stainless Steel package is offered as an option.

Since the Stainless Steel Package is a collection of exterior upgrades, the interior of a G-Class fitted with this option won't receive any cosmetic change. But whether the Stainless Steel Package is availed or not, the cabin features, as standard, a 12.3-inch infotainment system as well as analogue gauges. Customers with deeper pockets could have them upgraded to a more contemporary modern 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

In the United States, the G Class will be offered only in the guise of the G 550 at launch. Sitting on its core is a high-performance 4.0 liter biturbo V8 that could deliver 416 hp of max output and 450 lb.-ft. of torque peak. Power will be sent to the wheels through a nine speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the more potent G 63 is powered by the same engine, but with higher power ratings – up to 577 hp of output and up to 627 lb.-ft. of torque.

The 2019 G-Class looks very similar to – with almost the same rugged appearance – as its predecessor despite boasting a number of updates. It features reshaped headlights, rear tail lights, slimmer front blinker as well as a new set of wheels. It is also larger than the previous G-Class, growing by 2.1 inches in length, 4.8 inches in width, and 0.3 inches in height. The new 2019 G-Class is also more refined and more capable off-road, as made possible by an advanced all-wheel-drive system featuring three adjustable locking differentials.

This is Mercedes' version of the ultimate SUV, going places that other SUVs or soft crossroad vehicles fear.

Forget those GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE etc, this is the response to the Land Rover Defender, the Toyota Landcruiser and the Prada etc..

The blurb from Wiki:

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, sometimes called G-Wagen (short for Geländewagen, "cross country vehicle"), is a mid-size four-wheel drive luxury SUV

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_G-Class

The latest version was just released late last year, and it's interesting that the older version is still being made, after 35 years. Now that's a long lasting vehicle.

That version last I had the pleasure of going around for a few days in this latest version, and it certainly did the trick, in the busy streets of Phonm Phenh and also rising to the occasion when the going got tough..

Now let' not pretend this is a barebones Land Rover Defender, for despite the boxy looks and the industrial strength doors, this latest version has the outwards looks and also plenty of luxury trappings such that you will still be welcome to park at the lobbies of the Raffles Hotel and yet be able to ford that little stream on your large estate at home..

It retains the key visual cues of the older one, but when you step inside... woo...

The version I checked out was the AMG one and let's say, the power is what Rolls Royce likes to call "more than adequate"... mountains of torque, plenty of accessible power and a panoramic view of the roads with a commanding presence, this car will lord over other cars on the road ,and even in the chaotic roads in Cambodia, you will find cars parting as you progress.

Potholes? No issues

Flooded roads?  Piece of cake, just watch that step as you let your partner get down ... it won't look out of place in a Safari, and it will be fine if you drop off that hot chick at the Sofitel too.

The interior is a utilitarian kind of luxury, with durable materials and also a modern interface. No MBUX, and I actually think that's a good thing.

Acres of space in front and behind, you could park a couple of lions and maybe bring along a whole glamping set of tents as well. Or if you need to transport some furniture, the seats are flexible and very comfortable for long drives.

There are still swathes of leather, fine quality wood panels as well as soft touch materials in the right places, whilst retaining tough wear hard ones elsewhere.

How about the fuel consumption? Well, to paraphrase that famous Chivas Regal commercial where the commentator says, "if you need to know the price, enjoy the scenery"... here I would say, if you need to know the FC, maybe go down the road and ask for the Hyundai or Mazda instead.

Despite all that chatter about improved materials and a fancy cabin in the afore mentioned cars, you won't be mistaking them anytime soon for this moving luxury barge.

I also had the privilege of driving the civilian Hummer 2 and the military version way back... and this SUV behaves very differently. The Hummer is a beast, and works fine in tough wide open spaces, but here, the G Class is far more agile and yet competent. I had fond memories of the Unimog, and the cross terrain capabilities reminded me of that.

NVH is brilliant, so cyclists watch out!

Now over in Cambodia and also Stateside, it costs a "paltry" 150 k USD, but I shudder to think what it costs back home...

Back to reality now... and my bread van...

(PS: I wasn't sponsored and it's not a paid article - just happened to visit a friend who owns one)

A while back, we used to refer to the Volvo V70 as the "flying brick", well this is the "flying SUV"... hopefully Merc will organise some kind of test drive for aspirants to check out...
