Woman arrested for causing commotion in Huawei store

SINGAPORE - A 53-year-old woman was arrested on Friday (July 26) at the Huawei store in Jem shopping mall for causing a commotion.

The woman kicked up a fuss when she was told that she did not obtain a ticket issued by the Huawei staff earlier, which would allow her to buy a Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 phone at the promotional price of $54, the police said.

Under Huawei's National Day promotion, the price of the phone was slashed from $198 to $54 for Singaporeans and permanent residents above the age of 50.

Police said the woman refused to leave the premises despite several requests by the store manage.

The police were alerted to the incident at 10.25am. When they arrived, the woman refused to comply with police instructions to leave and was arrested for criminal trespass.

All Huawei needed to do was get a marketing person to vet all promotional materials plus do basic stuff right such as:

Put a disclaimer if required.

State clearly items are limited to 20, 50 sets or whatever is the amount.

Give queue number for the units avail.

Put a stop to reservation which resulted in no units being available on day of promotion.

Lastly be accountable and sack the bugger who failed to do all of the above.

You can't position yourself as a premium handphone maker but exhibit the actions of a fly by nite business.

Huawei marketing & promotion department failed badly , how could thy not, whatapps news blasted every 4 corners, publicity has already heated-up all telco coy to anticipate and act accordingly yet thy shot themselves own footing.

It's like a burger chain having fillet-O-fish promotion for a whole weekends, yet ran out of fish breaded fillet, goodness gracious, didn't thy do inventory check ? well well, Huawei deserve it more than thy can chew. :a-aggressive:

Did thy ever remb thy are in the headline news yet asking for more drama to unfold !! [hur]

Actually something like this happened before. Many many years ago 1994-1995 when I was working in Macdonald there was a 50c cheeseburger promotion.

Whoa. People just come and order 7 cheeseburger at one shot (it cost only $3.50 for 7). Some even demanded for cheeseburger without cheese (hamburger was $1.40).

The promotion was supposed to be a month long but it ended after one weekend cos I remember the manager saying the bread factory could not keep up with the demand.

Thousands see red as stores run out of Huawei's $54 promotion phones

The company also said that some people who queued were able to get their hands on the Y6, although it did not say how many.

Huawei declined to give the number of handsets that were available at each outlet.

https://www.straitstimes.com/tech/thousands-see-red-as-stores-run-out-of-huaweis-54-promotion-phones

When Huawei advertise big big that its a 3-day promotion, gave people the impression that stocks were aplenty. Never made known upfront how many phones available at each outlet. Only at a very late stage then info emerged that it was around 20 - 30 sets per outlet (?!). And Huawel themselves never officially disclosed the numbers. If only got like 30 units per outlet, then could have just done the promo online via a lucky draw or something, don't make everybody (incl SPF) boh eng.

When Courts runs promotions, they will state clearly the number of units available for transparency and managing expectations.

The marketing dept should be fired. In other countries, the stores would be wrecked by those who couldn't get the phones.

Woman who failed to get S$54 Huawei phone arrested after causing commotion

You let everybody queue and make sure at least 70% of those who came get the promo, most people will be happy. Those who did not get it will look forward to the next promotion. But this one, 5000 people queue, only maybe 500 phones to sell .. CMI.

Best is to get staff to take orders from the queue, and those who are after a certain number, put up a big sign to say the queue ends here. It's quite common in Japan they do this since they have seasonal promotion like every month.

In the US, black friday you will find super long queue starting from the freeway. Again, big big signs outside store to tell you what's available and what not there. They also scared consumers sue them, put down everything in writing first.

I heard un confirm news that per outlet is about 25 pieces.. or only 500 pieces allocated.

For a population of 1.4 mil FT (PR) and Singaporean, thats a very cheap global marketing event where International news media is carrying.

The bad news is its makes the 54 year old and older who queue looks bad ..

They expect 30 sets to last 3 days of promotion. Their sense or judgment really off. 1st day, before the shops opened, already reserved and sold out. LOL.
