SINGAPORE - An Australian man has been charged over his alleged involvement in an incident at a condominium in Spottiswoode Park Road in which a 73-year-old man died after he was struck by a glass bottle.

Andrew Gosling, who appeared in court on Friday (Aug 30), was charged with one count of causing death by performing a rash act.

On Aug 18, Mr Nasiari Sunee, a delivery driver, was at a housewarming party of a relative at the Spottiswoode 18 condominium's barbecue pit area when a bottle hit him just as he was about to eat.

The oldest of his four children, service manager Nas Suriati Nasiari, 44, told The Straits Times that relatives suddenly heard two thuds before her father collapsed on the ground with a head wound.

They then spotted an intact glass bottle nearby.

A relative, who is a nurse, tended to Mr Nasiari before he was taken by ambulance to the Singapore General Hospital about 8.35pm.

Madam Nas Suriati said that his heart stopped thrice during treatment and the family decided not to resuscitate him if it stopped a fourth time.

"We didn't want to prolong the pain," she said.

Mr Nasiari's blood pressure plunged the next morning and he died around 9am.

The grandfather of nine was buried on Aug 20.

Following the incident, police went door to door at Spottiswoode 18 to look for the person responsible for causing the bottle to fall from the 35-storey building.

Residents told The Straits Times that officers showed them a picture of an Italian wine bottle.

They were also asked if they had been drinking wine and were willing to provide fingerprint samples.

Last year, the National Environment Agency took action on more than 1,200 cases of high-rise littering, and cameras were deployed in more than 1,000 areas with a persistent high-rise littering problem.

If convicted of the offence, Gosling can be jailed for up to five years and fined.

He will be back in court next Tuesday.

Go door to door knock and ask resident whether they would be willing to give finger print samples. I feel it should be composury to give finger print samples to help aid in investigation. Coz ask are they willing to give fingerprints samples. What if there are people not willing to give and this person is actually the one who throw the bottle and killed someone how?

If the authorities cannot even take your finger print then the culprit manage to escape,  which is the bigger evil? What would authorities do with your finger print? We should never let this PDPA and Human rights thing impede our safety. Like that then we should not have identity card liao.

Yup agree with you in this point.

Talk about justice is blind. The most penalty he is getting is up to 5 year jail and fine.

The family lost their father/grandfather/husband because of some drunk fool.

An Australian man charged with killing a grandfather when he allegedly threw a wine bottle off the balcony of a Singapore high-rise is facing 15 years jail and a public caning.

Andrew Gosling, 47, allegedly tossed a bottle of Italian red from the seventh floor of a Singapore apartment complex about 8.40pm on August 18.

The bottle, allegedly thrown by the Melbourne-born I.T contractor, hit Nasiari Sunee, 73, on the head, as he stood celebrating at a relative's housewarming party two storeys below.

Gosling, who works as a contractor for tech company Orica, had been charged with what is known locally as the 'killer-litter crime'.

But that charge was upgraded to the more serious 'voluntarily causing grievous hurt with an instrument' over the weekend, meaning if found guilty he now faces not only jail time but also a Muslim-style caning.

SINGAPORE — A man who was hauled to court for throwing killer litter in August was handed one more charge on Thursday (Dec 5) that describes his act as a “religiously aggravated” one.

Australian national Andrew Gosling, 47, has now been charged with voluntarily causing hurt by means of an instrument — a glass wine bottle that he threw from the seventh floor lift landing of the Spottiswoode 18 condominium towards a table near the barbecue area on the fifth floor on Aug 18.

According to court documents, the bottle struck a woman named Ms Manisah while she was at the table, causing bruises to her right shoulder, and that this act was “religiously aggravated”.

No other details were given.

Court documents showed that such an act happens if an offender demonstrates hostility towards the victim — at the time, immediately before or after committing the offence — based on the victim’s religion.

The offence could also be partly or fully motivated by hostility towards “members of a racial or religious group based on their membership of that group”.

Initially, Gosling had been charged with causing the death of 73-year-old Nasiari Suree by a rash act for the same incident.

This charge was later upgraded to a more serious one of causing grievous hurt with an instrument likely to cause death.

The wine bottle that Gosling had allegedly thrown had struck Nasiari, a delivery man and grandfather of nine, on the head. Nasiari was taken unconscious to the Singapore General Hospital, where he died from his head injuries the next morning.

According to media reports, Nasiari was at a relative’s housewarming party that fateful evening. He was about to eat when the bottle struck him on the head.

Gosling, who worked in the IT industry, remains in remand and will return to court on Jan 2.

If convicted of causing hurt by a weapon in a religiously aggravated act, he could be liable to one-and-a-half times more of the punishment for the offence.

This means he could be jailed for up to 10-and-a-half years, fined, caned, or any combination of the three.

If convicted of causing grievous hurt by a weapon likely to cause death, he could be jailed up to 15 years, and fined or caned.

Credit to the SPF for solving this case. Cos it will be hard with no CCTV evidence and no direct eye witness accounts.

Hopes it bring closure for the family.

Australian Andrew Gosling jailed in Singapore for throwing wine bottle at elderly man, killing him

Quote

The court had been told that Gosling admitted during the investigation he was "angry and upset" over Islamic militant attacks in Bali and Melbourne in which many Australians had died, and wanted to "startle" the group after identifying them as Muslims.

Quote

Gosling's lawyers had said alcohol might have impaired his judgement, citing a psychiatric report, and argued his act was unlikely to have been religiously motivated. They added he intended to appeal against the sentence.

Gosling's mother Pamela told reporters outside the court that her son was not the sort of person to be hostile towards Muslims.

"He's our son and he is a gentle person and … he would never ever have thought those things and done those things," she said.

"It was something genuinely wrong for him to do that.

"He has friends who are all different races, all different nationalities, all different religions.
