Why are we spending millions to make machines smarter?

We should spend the money to make people smarter.

People are incredibly stupid.

Since this is a car forum lets talk about driving.

Can people stop themselves doing stupid things on the road?

Go to the reckless driving thread and see so many videos on stupid drivers.

Go to youtube and see so many stupid people doing stupid thing and I have only one question

Can they stop themselves doing stupid things?

Until we get smarter people the answer is no.

Lets spend millions to make people smarter.

We always hear our country is a little sampan and we don't want people rocking the boat and capsizing it and we all drown and quite right too.

From space our planet looks like a marble and a marble is even smaller than a sampan.

You can put thousands of marble in a little sampan.

So since a marble is so much smaller than a sampan we shouldn't rock our marble too or we will all drown.

We wreck our planet with global warming, the oceans keep rising and we will all drown right?

Only the rich will live. They will buy houses and in Bukit Timah hill and put fences around so no poor people can get in.

Here is an idea for property agents increase the price of Bukit Timah houses and say every where will be under water and only you will live.

People will pay millions more for these properties.

Because like any race. The winners tend to disproportionately monopolise most of the market. The company that can create a usable AI in the corporate world to minimise inefficiency will likely garner outsized gains. 

Just like everyone remembers viagra. But probably don't know the other two competitors who work exactly the same way or are even superior.

50-60 years ago, there wasn't an it sector. Computers probably changed the jobs of most workers.

Unlike the computer revolution, which more or less play the role of assisting human, promoting better productivity and efficiency, this AI evolution is not to be taken lightly, as it CAN replace human in multiple way, simply because it can think and act on it own.

Take for example, autonomous vehicle, almost all drivers would be affected another 10 - 20 years down the road, whereas use of computer technology such as navigation system enhance a driver performance, instead of replacing them.

In healthcare setting, if AI and robot are make full use of, I can safely assume that at least half of the healthcare staff (especially nurse and supporting staff) will be affected.

In security line, if AI can be effectively deployed to track security violation, why do one need to hire security guard to monitor CCTV recording and/or perform physical patrolling?

The above are just some example we can clearly see what is coming our way, with many others still beyond our imagination at the current stage (and this is the real scary part). No doubt automation and AI technology will create new employment opportunity, but for every 5 - 10 jobs lost, probably only 1 - 2 job will be created in the related field (most likely in the research and support industry), else it would defeat the whole purpose based on ROI consideration. So the threat is not totally unfound.

True yes. But who is needed to respond to the threat? U still need a security guard right. 

In the case of a lifeguard, I mentioned many times before that an AI can eliminate the laborious task needed to scan the water. But comes down to it, we still need the life guard to save the life right. For every AI, u will need someone to optimise the search algorithm etc etc. 

Will there be less life guards required? Probably. But many other things can be done. 

Like I said. Many jobs of the future haven't even been invented yet. 

And the fundamental truth remains of all computers. Garbage in, garbage out.

Like I said, there needs to be Hard headed optimism. 

But for locally, the first job to go would be taxi/grab drivers. Provided that GPS location system works perfectly in our crowded cbd.

Net job loss is a given, the question is where are the new jobs?  

My guess is to keep everyone employed as AI and machines take over most of the work, we will work less hours and as we have more leisurely time, we may need more entertainment?  That is the optimistic view.
