$60,000 for this.... don't know how many times compare to new car price at 1977.

https://www.sgcarmart.com/used_cars/info_photos.php?ID=894020&CUR=3#photo

My dad got a brand new Datsun 120Y (same color and wheel cover as the one below but a different grille) in Apr 1977 for about $12K (and got back ~$7K at end of 10 years)

The car doesnt look original anymore with the various "updates". The center arm rest. The aircon compressor looks weird, was it retro fitted? Then there was the alarm and central locking. Should have kept it as original as possible.

the belt driven radiator fan also gone, I saw two electric fans

Actually I even wonder if the car was originally registered in Singapore??[confused]

There are 2 sets of registration dates provided, and if according to original registration date  (Oct 1977), VRN should be FE / EG plate, while EP is sometime in late 1980 iirc.

In 1987 COE had not been introduced. Are you referring to the resale value or PARF?

In the mid to late 80s before COE started.

PARF is fixed. 1.6L and below will get $11,200.

Those above 1.6L will get $29,000.

The 1989 Subaru Legacy was very popular, 1.8L selling less $60k. Can get a scrap value of $29k.

That Corolla might be an imported car. The grille does not look like it is from local agent ones. There was a period when imported cars (咸水车)were very popular. Later, the authority slapped a $10K surcharge on each car!

Found it after some digging online. one other comment for PARF then. cannot be encashed in full. used in full only if used to offset when buying a new car. else if one wanted to stop owning a car, then the scrap paper would be sold at a discount to someone else registering a new car.

Yes, the amount I mentioned was from PARF rebate, after deducting dealer commission and kopi money.

The fixed PARF was from early to late 90s. Before that was another scheme / method of calculation.

Legacy was not the most VFM model. Lada Samurai Samara was the winner, can get new for <$19K, drive 10 years scrap and get back $11.2K. I think there was another Russia made hatchback (Yugo), selling at $16 - 17K too (imagine depreciation for a full 10 years was barely $5K+)!!

PARF certificates were traded like shares script from 1975 to 1989, as the cert can be used to offset up to 60% ARF of new car (must be in the same category).

Unlike today, the offsetting of ARF was based on new car OMV. For example my dad's 120Y, the scrap certificate when used to register a 3rd gen Honda Accord 1.6 (selling at $52 - 56K in 1986), can offset 50% ARF of the Accord, which was about $9 - 10K approx.

In contrast, if the same PARF cert was used on a 1986 Nissan Sunny 130Y (selling at <$40K), it would have worth not more than $6 - 7K.

So the selling price of PARF certificate is dependent purely on the market demand, as well as new car price (linked closely to OMV & ARF).

This loop hole was eventually plugged in 1991 when government introduced the fixed PARF (as shown in the table you have attached).
