Jensen Interceptor II (1969 - 1971)

The Jensen Interceptor is a grand touring car which was hand-built at the Kelvin Way Factory in West Bromwich, near Birmingham in England, by Jensen Motors between 1966 and 1976. The shooting brake shaped body was designed by Carrozzeria Touring of Italy rather than by its own design staff. The body was also made from metal, rather than glass-reinforced plastic (found on the 1st generation Interceptor 1950 - 1957). The early body’s were also made in Italy by Vignale, before Jensen took production in house.

Jensen Motors used Chrysler V8 engines for the Interceptor, starting with the 6,276 cc with standard 3 speed TorqueFlite automatic or optional 4 speed manual transmissions (only on 22 of Mark I - no more manual option from Mark II onward) driving the rear wheels through a limited slip differential in a conventional Salisbury rear axle. The 6.3L V8 engine produced 335 hp SAE gross, or 270 hp SAE net. It was replaced with another 7,200 cc V8 Chrysler engine from 1971.

Only 1,676 Mk II Interceptor were built between Oct 1969 to August 1971.

Imagine the insane amount of road tax paid if it wasn’t a classic plate!

Hmm..wiki seems to say that there were many more (6408 from '66-'76) that were built.

More importantly, the cousin of this model - Jensen FF - was the first ever production 4WD passenger car (ie, not an off-roader) in 1967, preceding the Subaru Leone by 5 years, and the Audi Quattro by 14 years.

Based on my initial research, the 6,408 units comprises of:

• MK I (1,033 sportback)
• MK II (1,616 sportback)
• MK III (3,432 sportback, 267 convertible & 60 coupe)

However, I think these should be a more accurate figures published on The Jensen Museum.

• MK I (Sep 1966 – Sep 1969) = >1,024 units
• MK II (Sep 1969 – Sep 1971) => 1,128 units
• MK III (Aug 1971 - Dec 1976) => 4,255 units
• MK III SP (1971 - 1973) => 232 units
• MK III Convertible (1973 - 1976) => 456 units
• MK III Coupe (1975 - 1976) => 56 units
• Total => 7571 units (excluding 320 FF - 195 MK I, 110 MK II, 15 MK III)

BTW, the FF is another different animal although the original Interceptor was already a legend...

There was a Jensen for sale a year back ; don’t know if it was sold or withdrawn
