The Honda Jazz/Fit have no direct competitor in many years. Yaris is not available, Suzuki Swift too small, VW polo and golf not too reasonably priced, Nissan Note spacious but lack the looks and power. Hyundai i30 ridiculously priced for a korean make.

My 5cents.

but the korean made i30 is a 1.4 turbo engine with dct which trumps all the other available options. hatchbacks are good cars for first time car owners though, small nimble and easy to navigate/park in sg's heavy city driving.

jazz 1.5 is priced pretty close to the i30 actually. jazz/fit 1.3 is in a niche market of its own with sufficient power for everyday drive + sufficient interior space for a small family of 4. agreeable that swift is tiny but the new 1.0 turbo makes it a joy to drive the expense of interior space. note is totally a piece of junk that is underpowered at 60+k, heck even buying a myvi makes more sense than buying the note if someone sees beyond the space.

jazz/fit 1.3 - 65k +/-

swift 1.0 - 70+k

jazz 1.5/i30 - 90k +/-

end of the day in this segment, its all about price vs functionality and jazz/fit 1.3 fit right well within that range at around 65k while polo/golf both close to 100k mark and makes more sense for folks to buy a sedan like avante/civic/octavia at that price.

Agree the interior design is at least 5 years behind all other brands.

If Toyota offer this Yaris with a 1.0T engine and manual transmission, it will definitely be a potential hot hatch. Of course, BM typical mgt means this will unlikely to occur

Toyota Premieres GR Yaris
—Toyota Now Accepting Pre-orders for the Special-edition RZ “First Edition” and Special-edition RZ “High-performance First Edition”—

The GR Yaris—a sports car based on knowledge and know-how for making it a FIA World Rally Championship winner—was developed by collaborating with professional drivers using various roads around the world to make it a car that would enable anyone to enjoy driving with peace of mind.
⁃ Vehicle packaging with attention paid to aerodynamics, light weight, and high rigidity
⁃ 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine G16E-GTS developed via the application of knowledge cultivated by competing in numerous motorsports
⁃ Newly developed “GR-FOUR” sports 4WD system for supporting driving that feels good in all driving situations and that can match the driving style of any driver

Chiba, Japan, January 10, 2020–Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) premiered the new GR Yaris—a homologation model born to win the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)—at the Tokyo Auto Salon today.

Along with aiming to commence sales of the GR Yaris in around summer 2020, Toyota began (from 10:00 a.m. today) accepting online-only pre-orders in Japan for two special editions of the new model—the RZ “First Edition” and the RZ “High-performance First Edition”. Pre-orders will be accepted from January 10 to June 30, or for approximately six months.

Learning from competing in the WRC, Toyota developed the GR Yaris together with Tommi Mäkinen Racing from the ground up to be a WRC winner, as an original model of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s sports car lineup.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, which has been conducting activities to “refine people and refine cars” in the pursuit of making ever-better cars, has—from its entrance in the 2017 Rallye Monte-Carlo in Monaco to the present—come to know, through the WRC, various types of roads regularly used by its customers around the world. Thus, the GR Yaris was developed to be a car that responds to driver demand on all types of roads worldwide. Based on the knowledge and know-how accumulated by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, the birth of the GR Yaris is the result of giving form to what has been learned from the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Racing Team about how to make cars that are competitive in the WRC, as well as the result of reflecting evaluations by non-Toyota professional drivers from the early stages of development. In short, the GR Yaris is meant to be a car that allows anyone to drive as one wishes with peace of mind.

The GR Yaris employs a sports 4WD platform based on the TNGA approach. Taking feedback from real WRC experiences, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing built the GR Yaris from scratch to achieve a high-rigidity body of highly refined balance while also optimizing front and rear suspension geometry. By combining its platform with the “GR-FOUR” sports 4WD system, efforts were made to achieve a high level of dynamic performance. Furthermore, the upper body, in addition to using aluminum for the hood, trunk lid, and door panels, features a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic roof panel formed using the sheet molding compound method, which accommodates a high level of freedom in shape design. The firm three-door-type cabin points to excellent aerodynamic performance, while light weight is still achieved.

Among the GR Yaris’ available engine variations, the 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine is a newly developed compact and light high-power unit. In addition to the high-speed combustion of a TNGA engine, by increasing engine revolutions through the use of lightweight moving parts, and by optimizing the turbocharger and other elements of the air intake and exhaust system, efforts were made to achieve the world’s highest maximum output for a three-cylinder engine of 200 kW (272 PS), as well as to achieve continuous provision of abundant torque over a wide range of engine speeds. Combined with a six-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission), which makes rhythmical gear changes possible, this engine provides overwhelming acceleration and allows users to experience an increase in engine revolutions that feels good.

Furthermore, the newly developed “GR-FOUR” sports 4WD system, which uses a front and rear variable driving force system enabled by a multi-plate clutch, transfers the power of the new engine to all four wheels with minimal loss. Freedom of driving force distribution between the front and rear wheels has been increased, making possible delicate control that matches road surface conditions. These advancements have resulted in a higher level of stand-out driving stability.

Production will be carried out on a dedicated production line at Toyota’s Motomachi Plant, which has a long and solid track record of manufacturing sports cars, and plans are for assembly to be carried out by takumi (master craftsperson) team members.

Available only through pre-order, the special-edition RZ “First Edition”, based on the GR Yaris’ RZ grade, will don customized specifications in the form of its front grille, front side diffusers, rear spoiler, and rear bumper all being in matte black. Additionally, the special-edition RZ “High-performance First Edition”, based on the GR Yaris’ RZ grade and featuring high-performance equipment with heightened performance limits, will feature the customized specifications of the RZ “First Edition” plus BBS forged aluminum wheels in matte black.

Toyota will accept concrete First Edition purchase inquiries limited to customers who pre-order online. The vehicle price of the special-edition RZ “First Edition” is planned to be 3.96 million yen (including consumption tax), and the vehicle price of the special-edition RZ “High-performance First Edition” is planned to be 4.56 million yen (including consumption tax).

With a high powered force induction engine, it is anticipated the Yaris GR4 will achieve 0-100 km/h acceleration of approximately 5.5 seconds.

With a mid 5 seconds timing, it can go toe to toe with Honda Civic Type R (0 - 100 at 5.9 sec), Subaru WRX (0 - 100 at 5.9 sec) and Golf GTI (0 - 100 at 6.5 sec).

Toyota may have given Honda, Subaru and Volkswagen some serious competition in this class of cars. Hope it will be available in Singapore, this is the car

that I will gladly part my money for.

The 4WD is an USP not seen in this class (supermini/pocket rocket) since the Audi RS1. That alone should account for an excellent century sprint timing.  I am guessing it should be closer to 5 seconds.

The only thing that disturbs me is the 3-cyl engine. Wonder how it feels and sounds. The Fiesta ST seems to capably run on 3 spark plugs though.

GR Yaris open for booking in Europe

Toyota GR Yaris gets C-seg hot hatch price in Europe

Quote

The 2020 Toyota GR Yaris is now open for pre-orders in Europe, and the rally homologation special hot hatch isn’t cheap, far from it. That’s entirely expected, given how bespoke it is. But exactly how expensive?

In Germany, the GR Yaris will start at 33,200 euros (RM156,024), which is just 2,000 euros (RM9,399) below the price of a Renault Megane RS, a hot hatch from the next class up. The latter is of course bigger and more powerful. Surprised? You shouldn’t be, because the Japan price of the top RZ High Performance GR Yaris is 4.56 million yen (RM180,183). The FK8 Honda Civic Type R – again, bigger and more powerful – goes for 4.5 million yen (RM177,801).

It’s the same story in the UK, where the base GR Yaris starts from £29,995 (RM162,641), rising to £33,495 (RM181,619) for the GR Yaris Circuit Pack. The outgoing Mk7.5 Volkswagen Golf GTI is priced around £33k and the Civic Type R starts from £32k. The top Hyundai i30 Ngoes for £29k. In the B-segment hot hatch arena, fellow three-door Ford Fiesta ST starts at nearly £10,000 less, although it has less performance and kit than the Toyota.

But the GR Yaris – revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January – is a very special car, more so in today’s auto landscape. Toyota didn’t have to make it, and in most other companies where the boss isn’t a petrolhead, a car like this would have been deemed a waste of money and resources.

You see, the latest European Yaris is five-door-only because of market demand, and Toyota created this bespoke three-door body just so that they can have a better base for their 2021 Yaris WRC challenger. The GR Yaris’ reason to exist is the World Rally Championship, like that famous Castrol-liveried Celica GT-Four homologation special you played in Sega Rally. Or the Lancer Evo and WRX STI of yesteryear.

Rules dictate that the WRC cars have to be based on production car bodies, and this three-door style, with the rear of its roof (made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic, by the way) sloped to the max, will allow for better aero on the eventual rally car. In contrast, all the above C-segment hot hatches are tarted up versions of their Tesco/Aldi special stage siblings.

Under the hood is a turbocharged G16E-GTS 1.6 litre three-cylinder engine pushing out 272 PS and 370 Nm of torque, astounding figures for a three-pot motor. Hooked up to what’s said to be the lightest and most powerful production 1.6L engine around is a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Euro-spec car “makes do” with 261 PS and 360 Nm, possibly because of emissions tuning. Gazoo Racing claims a 0-100 km/h time of under 5.5 seconds and top speed capped at 230 km/h. There will be a single high-spec grade, but customers will be able choose from Circuit and Convenience option packs. The former is for “focused, high-speed driving” while the latter is for “more comfort-oriented road performance”.

Power goes to all four corners through a GR-Four AWD system and doing the shuffling are two Torsen mechanical self-locking differentials at each end. The pilot gets to choose from three settings – Normal (60:40 split), Sport (30:70) and Track (50:50). MacPherson struts suspend the front end while the standard Yaris’ rear torsion beam has been swapped for double wishbones. No active damping in the interest of weight.

Speaking of weight, the GR Yaris weighs just 1,280 kg. Besides the three-pot engine and CFRP roof, the doors and hood are from aluminium. There’s no centre diff for the same reason. Quite some car, this.

so long still no news of 2020 yaris in singapore?

It was launched in Japan in Feb, and it's slated to be launched in Europe only in the 2nd half of this year. So, it's not very long.

Mazda 2 1.5L same price as jazz 1.3

perform much better than jazz.

swift is damn lag.   1L turbo only work well with dsg.

And what is so unusual about that???

The Yaris hasn't been officially sold here since 2014. Besides, there is the booted version of the Yaris called the Vios....
