One needs to be prepared that his car might be driven over a curb, get involved in accidents,  get stolen or even get involved in illegal activities like drug or  cigarette  smuggling which means the car may be impounded by the authority.

Pretty sure there are a handful out there who will do so. Maybe its an underutilised car, maybe the owner is always away on business trips (underutilised), maybe the owner is struggling on loan repayments, maybe its just for the extra income (no harm right). Instead of renting out illegally, people now have a platform to do so legally. Everything sounds good, until your car gets totalled. 

Haven't got to reading the article on how insurance will cover that but yeah, pretty sure this untouched market will take off. There's always people interested to earn some passive income but this is obviously not for the majority. A car to me is personal and I wouldn't share it with a stranger(s). 

How many of you here are open to "car sharing" though? 

That said, when Airbnb first started out, it offered me one of the best overseas experiences. Being able to stay in the home of a local host enables me to get acquainted to the country I'm visiting on a more personal level, besides the cheaper accommodation prices of course. However overtime, it became so commercialised that booking on Airbnb meant I didn't even have to talk to anyone during the check in process. Pros and cons. Hassle free check in, but at the same time, the essence of Airbnb, lost.

Yes,  it is the economy of demand and supply. 

No sidetrack, but a couple of points to raise here though I could be wrong, Airbnb is different from Carbnb, the nature of Airbnb is that :

One bought a property and rent it out on short term basis, this is exactly the same as car rental business today.

The house owner does not stay in the same  room that he rents out, just like a car rental company will not drive the same rented car.

But for Carbnb, the owner will still drive the car that he rents out when the car is returned. 

The one who is renting the room stays in the landlord's house,  the landlord has some high degree of control over the way the house/room is used. Whereas when a car is driven out by a hirerer  , the owner does not have control how the car is driven.  

So Airbnb is similar to car rental, but Carbnb is completely a different story. But again you are correct that some may still rent out his car. We shall  wait to read from news.

IMO, the only type of people that will rent out their car in this manner are those that don't care too much abt the car.

i'm not sure if I want to rent a car from car owners with such perspectives, esp if it's an older car with more maintenance requirements. I'd rather rent from a proper professional rental company where there's a higher chance that the car is properly cleaned and maintained.

hopefully this Drive Lah has a good review system for both owners n hirers.

Like you said, during renting if the car has problem or car already has problem and then rent to the person, will the person liable for it?

u mean the person that rented the car? good question. Dunno… tricky... what if the lack of maintenance directly or indirectly led to a car accident/collision?

or say.... engine oil leak while driving. Engine run out of oil. Engine overheat and bearings seize. Who settle? Or same case but with coolant running out.

if battery died, cannot start in the middle of the rental period how?

even if renter not liable and no accident/collision, is the inconvenience/headache worth it?

might as well take Grab.

Biggest difference between airbnb and carbnb is the airbnb renter cannot run away with your house! 

Probably carbnb is best summarised as desperate owners renting to desperate renters?

Singapore not as happening as australia where i'm currently living. over here, there's much more to worry about with renting out your cars especially to some random bloke.. but in singapore, it's relatively safe. 

i think the issue will be who will in the right mind rent out their car. most people in singapore get a car because it's their primary mode of transport. those with more than 1 car are obviously rich enough to own cars as a hobby, which means they're quite precious. the project is successful in europe and usa because the land mass is bigger and owning cars is cheaper. some people have 3-4  bnb cars that they don't mind renting out..

Comprehensive under proper usage, .....except for those exclusions,.......and not limited to those mentioned in the exclusion clauses....

Some of the possibly  unmentioned scenario are:

A car being used for illegal activities like racing, smuggling of contraband cigarettes or worse, drugs. These people wont use their own car, they wont steal a car to attract attention, you can guess where they get their car from.

When there is ponding under heavy rain, we want to guess if the person will drive the car through  the ponding ? The owner may only get to know when the car breaks down the next day or a few days later.

There can be many more unimaginable scenario for us to know once the program kicks off.

Though i underutilised my car right now [not driving to work, etc] i wont rent out my car at all. Scared kena those serial hump whacker, then there goes your suspension. Or maybe those that full lock till can hear driveshaft sound, die.

Ya, i mean the person renting the car. Looks like there might have many problems for such private rental. Think if i really want to rent a car, might as well go to those rental companies or car-sharing.

Very hard for it to work in SG... unless the renters really take care of the car which isn't usually the case
