"Moving away from the luxurious condominiums in Orchard Road will allow our girls to reach out more to the ordinary Singaporean," said an RGS spokesman.

PEASANTS!!!

OK, hearsay the school is very upset about this particular quote, which it claims was never said. So if it's really the case, if got no errata/apology, then see what will happen...

Many many years ago, i used to coach a group of RGS girls in tennis.  I must say, they definitely came across more snobbish than the regular high school girl.  But overall still respectful and decent.

i think part of this came from the fact that they know they did well academically to be in RGS so they feel more confident and superior.

There are quite many peasant girls in RGS too, not just the richies.    Its good to move schools out of expensive areas into the suburbs.

Your wife from RGS huh? :=B:

If no such 'memorable' quotes are inserted into press articles, how else would wider attention be drawn to what would under usual circumstances be simplistic and insignificant move of a school to another location?

If the old boys been following the news, u do know that over last 2 years, meritocracy which is more equitable in terms of reducing social strata/class divide, has been emphasised by govt and the administrators of the Raffles school.

While this move was many years in the planning, and Bishan isn't exactly the heartlands heartlands, still a timely move.

I'm sure the RI students are very pleased by the move instead of just limited to beoing the RJC zeh zeh ... ... [laugh]
And by extension, Cat High boys also will be happier to go J8 more mei mei there... Then when Euonia JC comes into Sin Ming, also J8 more happening liao [:p]

Golden Village and Bubble tea at J8 sure rake in $$ [:p]

A waste of resources having single gender schools. The Raffles girls and boys school merge into one lo. Why built separate and then move here move there to bring them closer. Stewpig. Waste money. Elitist ppl and their elitist schools, pattern many many. Who are they trying to impress?

RGS clarifies 'ordinary Singaporean' comment, says it was not made by school spokesperson

SINGAPORE: Raffles Girls' School (RGS) said on Friday (Oct 25) that a controversial comment in The New Paper (TNP) about its move away from Orchard Road did not come from the school's spokesperson.

TNP had published a report on Oct 22 titled "Raffles Girls' School moves to new home", which included the comment: "Moving away from the luxurious condominiums in Orchard Road will allow our girls to reach out more to the ordinary Singaporean."

The comment, which drew widespread criticism, was attributed to "an RGS spokesman".

In a statement responding to queries from CNA, the school said that the report "had referenced an informal conversation with a staff member who was not the school's spokesperson".

"He had also not identified himself as such to the reporter."

The school also pointed out that the comments made to the reporter had been "off-the-record" and that the member of staff had "intended to convey that the move would allow students to engage more deeply with the local community, given the school's proximity to the Braddell area".

"At no point of time did he say 'ordinary Singaporean'," said RGS.

RGS moved from its Anderson Road campus to 2 Braddell Rise on Monday, and is now connected to Raffles Institution via an overhead bridge linking the bus stops on both sides of Braddell Road.

The new S$90 million campus was co-funded by the school and the Ministry of Education.

CNA has sought comment from TNP.
