Carbon82 Moderator December 6, 2019 Share December 6, 2019 Mum films heartbreaking final seconds before toddler falls 5 storeys through gap in Sabah bridge Tragedy struck over the weekend in Sabah, Malaysia. Local media report that two young siblings were crossing a bridge on Dec. 1 with their mother filming them when the unthinkable happened. The younger sibling tottered ahead as they neared the door. Unfortunately the bridge was incomplete, leading to the young girl tragically falling five storeys to her death. The girl reportedly had not even turned two. However, initial reports of the tragedy appeared to place some responsibility for the fall on the child’s mother not being diligent enough. According to The Daily Express, a police report sent to a Chinese media outlet used the word “membiar” — which, according to local media, means the children were allowed to do as they liked — seemingly implying negligence. Family members of the toddler were shocked and told The Daily Express what really happened. According to them, the mother was right behind her girls, filming them walking across the bridge. Here is a screenshot from a security camera that shows just how close the mother was to them, and how there don’t appear to be any demarcations, signs or alerts of danger anywhere in sight. And here is the video showing the moment before the toddler falling through the gap... ↡ Advertisement 7
Carbon82 Moderator December 6, 2019 Author Share December 6, 2019 As a parent, I can feel the pain. May the toddler RIP. Original article: Shocking Video Shows Johor Toddler Falling 5 Floors To Her Death From Gap in Incomplete Bridge All Malaysians love to go on a family vacation during the school holidays especially since it’s the end of the year and the festive season approaches. However, for this family, their joyful vacation turned to one of sorrow as an unfortunate accident happened right before the mother’s eyes. On Sunday (1st December 2019), a family from Batu Pahat, Johor was visiting the beautiful district of Penampang when tragedy struck. The family of four was having lunch on the fifth floor of a building located on Jalan Bundusan around 3.40pm. The mother allowed her two children to play around a nearby corridor and she was following them from behind. The pair of sisters (a three-year-old and a toddler who is a year and seven months old) were running hand in hand happily towards the direction of a bridge to a connecting building. There were no warning signs put up by the construction company or whatsoever, so the mother paid no heed and let her children enjoy themselves to the fullest as she was keeping an eye on them. Little did they know that the bridge is actually still under construction until it was too late. The toddler ran a little faster than her sister and she suddenly dropped down from the fifth floor onto the concrete ground below through a gaping hole. As soon as the incident happened, the police were alerted of the incident and the toddler was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, at 4.30pm she was pronounced dead by doctors. However, according to Daily Express Sabah, a Chinese newspaper implied that the mother was not supervising her children at the time of the incident. They used the word “membiar” which means the children were allowed to do as they liked based on the official statement from the police. This came as a shock to the family members of the deceased as the mother was following the children, and there is even video proof to show that! The official statement from the police is contradictive to what the mother had lodged in her police report. Roger Chow, the uncle of the deceased says: “The mother did not “membiar” or was irresponsible as suggested, but was filming her children running ahead of her, not knowing the danger that lies ahead. In her police report, she also mentioned that there were no warning signs put up by the management of the building.” To show what he said was the truth, Roger showed the people of Daily Express the police report which clearly states that the mother was supervising the children. We have keep our eyes on our young ones. After watching the video, I think even adults might not be aware of the danger in front. The bridge looks complete, as the gap is right at the far end and it's small. 10

For that, I am thankful that we have strict safety regulations here that minimize such occurrence. Other things to look out for when going overseas include traffic, object(s) falling from height, as well as snatch robber / kidnapper... 10
