Compulsory simulator training for learner drivers, motorcyclists to start Dec 16

07 Dec 2019 10:59AM (Updated: 07 Dec 2019 11:08AM)

SINGAPORE: Learning to drive a car or ride a motorcycle? You will have to undergo compulsory simulator training starting later this month, the police said on Saturday (Dec 7).

From Dec 16, all Class 2, 2A, 2B, 3 and 3A learner motorists will have to complete the training before they are allowed to book their practical driving or riding tests.

The requirement does not apply to those who enrolled with driving schools before Dec 16.

The scenarios used in the simulator training are based on the top 10 causes of traffic accidents that often result in injuries. These include high-speed expressway cornering, cyclists in blind spots and driving or riding in wet weather conditions.

The training comprises three modules, with each taking about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Learner motorists must have completed a minimum of five practical lessons before booking the simulator training.

“The simulator training provides learner motorists with the opportunity to practise defensive driving or riding in a safe and controlled environment,” the police said.

This is part of efforts to help learner drivers and motorcyclists better prepare for various road situations, and to inculcate good driving habits in them, they added.

The simulator training will be available at the ComfortDelGro Driving Centre, Bukit Batok Driving Centre and Singapore Safety Driving Centre.

Just sponsor driving wheel and PS4 Pro/Xbox One X and the latest racing games enough.

That will encourage "correct" driving behavior. 😂😂😂

Make so many rules and step for local to get driving license, but for foreigners, just need to pass theory test, right ?

total about 1 hrs, still acceptable to me,

anymore i feel its pointless and waste of resource. nothing beat actual driving on the road with the instructor beside u ,

even after u got your lisense no simulator will get close to having your dad or a experience driver sitting beside u for the first few week esp when going expressway for the first time, driving 80-90 for the very first time etc

Let's try not to make everything a FT privilege society perception. Else the thread quickly become a quick death.

Driving on expressway should be thought in driving school. It should be tested on real life situation.

Nothing to do with foreigners. All these rules and tests for local, and yet many still don't know how to check for blind spot, use indicator, drive defensively etc.

That's why reckless drivers thread is one of the most popular in this forum.

Also worth noting that in most other countries, they will swap out foreign drivers licenses to local licenses with no test whatsoever.  Including UK, HK, AU, NZ, US etc. So saying "FT privilege" is a stretch.

Simulator might be more useful for PMDs. How about simulating an escooter traveling at 150km/hr and then hitting a stone on the road? That'll probably be more effective.

I think the simulator is to test for spatial awareness capability......if you cannot pass the simulator, then no point going onto the road already. Some people simply has very poor spatial awareness.

I like the idea. I hope they extend this simulator test to the ageing drivers....like those above 65 to make sure they can still drive safely under night and rain conditions.
