Just had a DVT after a 14 hr flight with a 2 hr stop over in the middle.

Diagnosed 2 weeks after flight even though I'd been doing intense cardio work at the gym during those two weeks.

I want to buy some pressure stockings to wear on next flight.

But how to buy?

You get a choice of how much pressure you need to exert on lower leg and foot and you can buy on shoe size.

But apparently it is better to get proper fitting, calf circumference etc etc, to ensure they work properly and don't make things worse.

Seems not much work done by specialists investigating DVT and how it is caused and how best to ensure no repeat.

Anyone any experience?

Compression stockings i think the evidence is not strong, or the effectiveness is also equivocal. Make sure u take frequent breaks, stand up in the cabin and walk around.

One thing I've noticed is that airlines are much less generous dispensing water than they used to be.

Hi, can share what symptoms made you consult the doctor after 2 weeks?

Dear Bro Neutrino ... sorry to hear that you have a DVT. I am certain you have had it checked out. There is good advice from MoneyFM about your compression stockings ... they need to be properly fitted.

Pain in the right calf (quite severe and which I took panadol for to help me sleep) which from experience I knew wasn't a pulled muscle.

Slight enlarging of right calf compared to left but no reddening.

For some reason DVT came into my mind so went to polyclinic where I could see the doctor was considering even though not saying.

I think I mentioned DVT which I do think he was also thinking about but would not have referred me except I pushed him.

A&E based diagnosis on enlargement of calf and flight two weeks before.

I was warded in A&E overnight as couldn't get ultrasound that evening but ultrasound confirmed clot next day.

For cross continental flight I will always carry my own water bottle.  Ask the stewardess to top up after take off. So can always have supply of water without waiting for servings or asking for water.

Of course you can.

But one bottle of water on 14 hr flight is nowhere near enough even if it's a 1 liter bottle.

And try getting that refilled.

Rather than waiting to be served, just walk towards stewardess to get water.

Be careful not to drink too much water.

DVT can be fatal.

My son's classmate's dad passed away because of it. He complained of pain in his leg, went to A&E but was given only painkillers. Passed away 3 days later.
