Supercharged

Totally impractical design for a dining table -- the two long sides are not supported by the wood frame, only the short sides.

Tempered glass break due to heat? I thought tempered itself is a process of heat strengthening?

But glass is never a good idea lah. Whether it is table, partition or doors. Worse is entire building.  Haha

So i guess you also not a fan of this type right? 😆

On 19/1/2020

My friends and I were having steamboat at my place. About 30 minutes into the dinner, my dining table "EXPLODED" and the entire tempered glass top shattered into pieces. Now, steamboat lovers would know the potential devastation when a hotpot pot were to be toppled/spilled over. Now x10 of the damage because of the sudden shatter with glass flying everywhere.

After the incident happened, all of us sat there in shock, and we couldn't do anything as there were glass shards and hot soup everywhere. *please take a look at the picture to visualise the amount of damage done* we immediately called the ambulance and paramedics came down to rescue us. With all my guests injured, some with cuts bigger than the size of an eye. I myself was brought to NTF for treatment of 2nd degree burns.

I understand that there is a potential possibility of thermal stress that may occur on a tempered glass even though it is supposed to be tough, with 15mm of thickness. With no right or wrong answer to how much heat and duration will cause a tempered glass from shattering, we were unfortunate enough to experience this traumatic experience.

Damage occurred:
1. New kitchenware
2. Lots of injury (blood spilt everywhere)
3. A&E medical attention + follow up appointments
4. Blood stain on wall and sofa
5. Blood seeping into grout (have to dig out and reapply grout as there is no way we can clean it)
6. Food 😞

It was supposed to be a joyous gathering between my friends. But it ended up being a traumatizing experience. I hope my story will be a warning towards all tempered glass top table owners.

We have contacted the furniture company to ask for their course of compensation, unfortunately, the director of the company said that the best that he can do for us is to replace a brand new laminated table top for us as the base of our table is still intact. (Not even an entirely new table) - but that's besides the point - what we were looking for was minimally some responsibility on the company's end... to cover the medical bills and repair costs.

Would I be able to eat in peace at my own dining table in future, wondering about the safety of the table from the same company?

We shifted into our brand new home, with brand new furniture for the entire house, all ready to celebrate our first CNY at our new house. Instead, my husband and I were left speechless with all the mess left behind. When I came home from NTF last night, I broke down and cried when we opened the door. My house is in a mess and it smells like a crime scene of a murder.

But well....... thankfully it was not during the actual CNY, where elderlies and babies/children could have been severely injured.

OMG!  So the red "liquid" on the floor was blood!  I thought it was sauce or chilli at first.

Speedy recovery to the victims.

Thanks for sharing!  I'll definitely be more cautious about glass table from now onwards. 👍🏻

this is stupidity of the house owner and guests...........

first, the table is questionable.  the glass is only supported by 4 suctions?  how good is that?  and how much did the owner paid?  it looks like its cheaply done with some plywood beams and a piece of glass.

second, they got hot pot stove with soup on it?

these ppl need to go back to school to relearn.

you can have glass top table, but the glass need to be supported properly.  The best is the table has a full top surface and the glass is just placed on top.  100% supported.

Yup, I will never put a hot pot on a glass table without solid insulation, much less for prolonged period of time.

Did not know tempered glass can cut so badly.

So much food gone to waste.  What a pity.

What a sweeping statement you made here. There are thousands if not tens of thousands such table with tempered glass top all around and ppl have been using it without any issue. And tempered glass have been used on gas stove where it is exposed to even higher heat without issue as well.

In response to a Stomp query, a spokesman from Comfort Design told Stomp that the company is empathetic of Stephanie's situation and would like to assist them but said they believe they are not to blame for the accident as the table was not used "within its intended scope of use".

Here is their statement in full:

"Firstly, we'd like to extend our sympathy to Stephanie, her husband and their guests on the unfortunate incident that has happened.

"We were notified of the incident via a phone call yesterday, Monday 20 Jan 2020.

"Our table is made using tempered glass, which is a type of safety glass with increased strength as compared to regular, untreated glass.

"Tempered glass is considered safe because should the glass shatter, it'll break into granular chunks instead of sharp pieces which may cause cuts.

"The cuts that were seen in the pictures were, chances are, caused by the broken cutlery.

"We believe the accident was the result of inappropriate equipment being used on glass.

"When high temperature is applied to glass and the bending stresses exceed the strength of the glass, the glass may break.

"This is also known as thermal stress.

"Hotpot equipment should not be used directly on tempered glass tables as glass is a bad conductor of heat.

"Glass is not designed to withstand high temperature.

"This is the first time we've had glass shatter issues due to the use of hotpot equipment.

"Our company did discuss compensation with Mr Low (Stephanie’s husband) yesterday, which also included monetary compensation.

"However, the sum could not be agreed upon as Mr Low would like us to bear the full extent of their damage.

"Our company is empathetic of their situation and would like to assist them during this time of inconvenience, however, we would like to uphold our position where we think that our company and our product is not to be blamed for the accident as it was not used within its intended scope of use.

"Glass or tempered glass is a hard but also fragile material.

"It's been used in furniture and other household items for many years hence it's not a new material or resource.

"We'd like to educate the public that glass is not meant for use with hotpot equipment, which is the same reason why glass tables are not a choice material in hotpot restaurants.

"Moving away from hotpot equipment, we recommend that coasters (that are well designed for its intended use) or insulating materials be placed when hot cutlery/kitchen utensils are placed on tables.

"This will help protect and prolong the lifespan of the furniture."
