Number of big cars jumped in past decade

The number of cars with bigger and more powerful engines on our roads has jumped in the past decade, and is set to overtake those with smaller engines - a trend which could have implications for resources and emissions.

This is because Open category certificates of entitlement (COEs) - which can be used to register any vehicle type except motorcycles - end up being used almost exclusively for bigger cars, as those who sell or buy bigger cars have stronger bidding power.

Attached COE historical chart extracted from below link. Maybe there's some correlation . From 2009 to 2012, COE was generally on an uptrend. Cat B car numbers also increasing.

From 2012 to 2016, COE fluctuates between 60K and 95K. Cat B car numbers are more or less flat at 280K.

The news reporter mentioned this in his article:

"Along with more premium brands and private-hire players bidding for Cat A COEs (Mercedes-Benz has just introduced a Cat A C-class), Cat A prices may overtake Cat B prices.

This means mass market car buyers may one day pay more for their cars than premium car buyers."

and in this earlier article:

"Looking ahead, car dealers expect car premiums to converge this year as competition for Category A COEs (for cars up to 1,600cc) intensifies on the back of more premium models and private-hire purchases."

I think he is expecting COE Cat A to climb up and above Cat B prices this year.  Since Jul 2019, Cat A prices climbed slowly while Cat B prices corrected slightly.  So he could be right.

Current Cat A and Cat B is about $2K price difference.

I searched SG Cartmart and came up with below 2 similar spec models for comparison:

MODEL                                          PRICE         OMV    ENGINE   POWER  TORQUE

MINI One 5-Door 1.5 (A)          $114,888    $25,238    1499      101            190

MINI Cooper 5-Door 1.5 (A)    $141,888    $28,048    1499      134            220

If Cat A COE rises to the same level as Cat B, assuming everything being equal, the Mini One price would probably be around $116,888 instead.

Would I pay the extra $25K for a slightly faster ride ie. Mini Copper? My guess is different drivers would value engine power differently. Those who say "Hell yes!" would effectively skipped over to Cat B, denying the above prediction from realization.

The 130bhp limit for CAT A in the modern era of high output engine technology is out of line. Imagine 10 years ago, a flagship handphone has 16GB memory, 3MP camera...a top end laptop has 2GHz 2-core CPU, 250GB drive ran for 3 hours ... 2,000cc engine has typically 150bhp.

Today, a flagship handphone has 256GB memory, 12MP camera...a top end laptop has 2GHz 8-core CPU, 1 TB drive runs upto 8 hours ... 2,000cc engine has typically 190bhp.

Cat A or Cat B is not about being small or big cars. It is about progress and the advancement of technology. Technology will always improve, engines will continue to give more power from less fuel and less engine capacity. New generation of cars will get safer thru additional safety equipment.

So is LTA is out of touch with the current categorisation of COEs?

Should the definition for Cat A and Cat B COE be redefined?

Perhaps the official media should stop politicising Cat A and Cat B cars as small and big cars respectively. It will be more accurate to portray Cat A cars as very compromised, with restricted efficiency to keep the power output below 130bhp.

Also typically Cat A cars has less safety equipments to keep the OMV below $30,000.

What is next?

I also think that it’s time for LTA to recategorise Cat A and B cars. The 130bhp is limiting the cars that are brought into SG. VES is a major problem also. Cars are getting detuned in order to fit into Cat A and VES neutral.

130bhp is a fcking joke

btw, we are not talking about performance and speed

a small and nice compact family or suv with 150-180bhp would be nice but the lta scholar think 130bhp would do the job [mad]

If LTY still around.. He might have asked LTA to do a study and update the cat A and cat B category..

And please lor, everyone please stop subscribing to the myth that a tiny weak engine in a big body=excellent fuel economy.

The author 1st line was already subscribing to such myths already... 😞 SMLJ waste resources and higher emissions... 😞

The operative word here is Power to weight ratio. And if the power is down, the engine needs to work alot harder which otherwise would be handled nicely by a much more powerful engine. How to get great fuel economy when the weak engine is being flogged hard all the time? And when the engine is being flogged hard, are u sure you are saving the environment?

I have always advocated the merge of 2 cat into single large one. We are a laughing stock to the automotive world with this senseless and illogical ruling.

And also, standardize road tax calculation across the board! The formula in cal road tax should be the same whether if you have a 600cc K car or a 6.2L V8 muscle car. A vehicle with 4 wheels takes up roughly the same space on the road regardless of engine size. And all cars takes up the same parking lot space regardless of engine sizes...

It has been proven over and over again that big engines doesn't necessary mean higher pollutant engines.

You a joker. An attrage with low power also can do the job. Why need so much power?

if not because of the 130bhp rule

PI would have brought in a better equipped car at same price or better

yes, anyone can satisfy with 100bhp but a stupid rule is stupid as it is ... period

not limiting 130bhp does not stop attrage

but limiting 130bhp does stop a lot of other options

That's why we always see the lowest powered/spec of any car models on our roads.

Eg. Mazda 3 1.5L, Merc C180 (now even 160 coming in), 316/318, Corolla 1.6L...
