It was a hard time - 31 unforgettable days, beginning on Jan. 20, when the cruise ship set off from Yokohama, and ending on Feb. 20, when the quarantine was over, and countries sent chartered planes to evacuate their nationals.

Of 3711 people on the vessel, there were 634 confirmed cases up to Feb. 20, among them there was a quarantine officer & a firefighter. About 1/5 people on board were infected.

The inside space of the vessel, sealed, crowded, with a suitable temperature and humidity for corona virus, COVID19 is highly infectious.

Luckily, infectious as it is, it is not deadly. Half of the confirmed cases are asymptomatic. There are very few severe or mortality cases so far.

More info:

  • 69% of the people on Diamond Princess are over 50 years old.
  • 87% of the confirmed cases are over 50 years old.
  • 2 dead cases so far, both are over the age of 80.

The elderly need to pay more attention to #COVID19.

Singapore rejected Westerdam.

Cambodia allowed Westerdam to land, a good humanitarian act, but in a wrong way. Passengers & crew left for each destination without being quarantined on land first. That may cause bigger problem.😲

そうですね😱

They couldn't find enough rooms on land to accommodate the passengers?

Japan have the Olympic village if they really want to quarantine.

On a meeting on 08/02, an expert from Shanghai CDC says aerosol transmission is possible, besides droplets, contact & food.

Aerosol transmission is actually air transmission. To understand it better, we can review an example - a tragedy of SARS in Amoy Gardens Hong Kong, 2003. A SARS patient used the toilet, and eventually, 329 residents were infected, 42 died. The video explains how it happened through the building drainage system. It may also be a cause of COVID-19 outbreak on cruise ships.

Toilet hygiene & sanitization:

  1.  Keep the water trap full of water
  2.  Keep the toilet covered
  3.  Before flushing the toilet, cover it first
  4.  Better use ozone to sanitize and deodorize the toilet room

I heard taiwanese health experts said japan lack professionalism in handling the virus. Japan has no experience against sars and also olympic coming, the govt don’t want to escalate matter hence lock them at ship. Doesnt even bother to quarantine at proper place.

Japan is making the same mistakes which Wuhan made in early January. Japan has helped China, and we don't want to see Japan gets into this trouble.

19K people in Marathon on 16/02 (1 runner with a fever of 38.4℃)
10K people in Nude Festival on 15/02
The above are somehow like Wuhan in January before the outbreak of the coronavirus.

1 salaryman commuted between Chiba & Tokyo by train (1 of the most crowded in Japan) with a fever of 40℃ for a week before COVID-19 confirmed, because the doctors didn't want to hospitalize him.

Having accepted to anchor, they should have handled it properly. Not like keeping all together onboard and increasing the chance of infection.

Sg was in "sort of uncertainity" that time. Now we seem to be in control, probably we would have accepted Westerdam now.

Do we have the sufficient medical resources to handle 3,000 ppl?
Aloha resort can accommodate 3k ppl for quarantine.
Currently, there are 1.5k ppl under quarantine.

I like to have discussions first on a forum before writing a blog. In this way, I can get new facts and ideas. However, things often change faster than my thought😊

Worried about the outbreak in Korea, Japan and Italy, COVID-19 is not only about Wuhan or China anymore, it is about the human race.

😲SG has a total number of 89 confirmed cases. How many imported? and how many local?

Although this corona virus is heat-sensitive, tropical sunlight does not help indoors, especially in crowded and airconed places. Caution is still needed.
