U.S. Coronavirus Cases Surpass Those of China, Italy

Confirmed infections top 82,000 across country, exceeding all other national totals

Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the US have topped the totals in China and Italy, making the US the center of the global outbreak.

In the US, confirmed cases hit 82,404 on Thursday evening, surpassing China's 81,782 and Italy's 80,589. The total number of confirmed cases globally is 526,044, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University.

Since the US reported its first coronavirus case on January 20, more than 1,100 people in the country have died from the disease. The death tolls in Italy and China are higher.

Many of the new cases in the US are in major cities, like New York and New Orleans, where densely packed residents help the virus spread. Mayors and governors have said that patients with the virus could overwhelm hospitals, which would contribute to a rising death count.

To halt the virus' spread, people in many US cities and states are under some form of lockdown order. People are supposed to leave their homes only to go grocery shopping and take care of other essential activities.

According to data from Worldometer, coronavirus cases peaked in China in mid-February. The country combated the virus with strict quarantine measures covering 60 million people in Hubei province, where the outbreak originated.

Life is returning to normal in China, but the US has a long road ahead, and the economic fallout from the widespread shutdowns has affected millions of workers and companies.

US weekly jobless claims for the week ending March 21 totaled 3.28 million, the Labor Department reported Thursday, exceeding the consensus analyst forecast of 1.5 million. That was up from 281,000 in the previous week, which already marked a two-year high, Business Insider's Carmen Reinicke reported.

There are early signs that the shutdowns are helping.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that the aggressive social-distancing measures put in place in the state were starting to slow the virus' spread. New York is the center of the US outbreak, with nearly half the country's cases.

Yahoo News J&J's Chief Scientific Officer predicts vaccinations against coronavirus within 12 months.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Paul Stoffels says the pharmaceutical giant is making good progress on development of a vaccine against COVID-19 “and we are now close to selecting a candidate vaccine which we can bring forward for pre-clinical and clinical testing.”

Dr. Stoffels told Yahoo Finance large-scale testing is scheduled to start in November. J&J is working with U.S. regulators to finish pre-clinical work before testing begins.

“It has to be very safe and effective and that’s why we need some time to test,” Stoffels said.

“I am pretty comfortable that within 12 months we will be in a different situation and probably will be able to start vaccinating people,” Stoffels predicted.

In the meantime he says prevention and social distancing are the best precautions to keep people from becoming ill.

Since the beginning we have been told 12-18months for a working vaccine, only DT said otherwise.

He heard "almost finished" but didn't realise the months of testing and regulatory approvals needed to start actually putting it in people. This is what happens when a person has concentration span of a newt.

A group of young adults held a coronavirus party in Kentucky to defy orders to socially distance. Now one of them has coronavirus

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/24/health/kentucky-coronavirus-party-infection/index.html

(CNN)At least one person in Kentucky is infected after taking part at a "coronavirus party" with a group of young adults, Gov. Andy Beshear said Tuesday.

The partygoers intentionally got together "thinking they were invincible" and purposely defying state guidance to practice social distancing, Bashear said.

"This is one that makes me mad," the governor said. "We have to be much better than that."

While Covid-19 has been more deadly and severe for people older than 60 and those with underlying health issues in data from China, health officials and leaders around the country have been imploring millennials and other young people to practice social distancing, because even people who are infected but without symptoms can transmit it to other people.

In fact, recent modeling based on Chinese data shows that asymptomatic carriers of the virus may have been responsible for its initial rapid spread there.

And the virus seems to be affecting young people in the United States more than it has in China. A report released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that up to 20% of people hospitalized with coronavirus in the United States are between the ages of 20 and 44.

"So far the demography definitely seems to be very different in the United States versus in other countries that saw this hit earlier," US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said on NBC's "Today" on Monday.

In New York state, more than half of coronavirus cases -- 53% -- have been among young people between the ages of 18 and 49, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday.

California on Tuesday reported the first death in the United States of a Covid-19 patient younger than 18, and the family of a 12-year-old in Georgia said Sunday she was on a ventilator and fighting for her life in an Atlanta hospital.

There also have been "concerning reports from France and Italy" about young people becoming seriously ill, "and very seriously ill in the ICUs," said Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House's coronavirus reponse coordinator, last week.

With this kind of brainless adults in US, how can US not becoming the country to have the most COVID-19 cases in the world.

I think the Democrats are ramping up their testing, boost the number of  positive infection, then use it to get rid of Trump with their networks and campaign.

While commenting the American for their act of social irresponsibility, sorry to say that we also have lots of the same kind of people here.

Take care and keep well away by 1 metre from next person pls. Try not to pah pah zhao.

If can, designate 1 person in family to be driver, grabfood, grassshopper, i mean shopper etc. So lesser chance for Covid-19 to say hello, especially to your lungs.

Safe ride

Cheers
