Airline Seats for the Pandemic Age

source: https://coolmaterial.com/travel/airline-seats-for-the-pandemic-age/

Wonder what the future of commercial flying will look like after COVID-19 wreaks its global havoc? Italian company Aviointeriors just came up with two potential solutions to airliner seating for passenger protection. The first one is called the “Glassafe”, and it fits into existing airplane seats to create barriers between passengers without obscuring vision. It also brilliantly prevents droolers from leaning against you and violating your personal space (and health). It even protects aisle passengers from those walking by. Additionally, it keeps costs low for airlines. The second solution is more complex. The Janus seat, inspired by the two-faced Roman God, situates the middle passenger in a rear-facing position and separates the passengers with a plastic barrier. It becomes complicated because the middle passenger faces two people behind him and also forces airlines to reconfigure seating, unlike the Glassafe solution. Regardless, it’s good to see Aviointeriors thinking outside the box to figure out a way to make flyers feel safer and reduce in-air contamination. Look for other companies to come up with solutions and for Aviointeriors’ ideas to evolve.

Hypersonic

People will turn one side when they sneeze and hit the person sitting next to them anyway.

Need to have a screen between seats and all passengers to wear a mask.

Why are they acting as if this isn't airborne in the least?

This sort of measure only helps in preventing infections that are purely contact spread. Even droplet borne infections can easily cross this "barrier". And COVID-19 is more than that, by the evidence we're gathering. Probably not as efficient at airborne transmission as something like measles, but worse than seasonal influenza, probably.

Also, the evidence is very strong that you leave lots of virus behind at toilets. So that's a fairly efficient way to spread the "badness" around, since I don't think there are fancy alternatives to communal crappers on conveyances.

Basically, this and other infectious diseases will be a major risk for flying. I'm not really bothered because I actively avoid flying, but so many seem addicted to their wanderlust.

They probably got the idea here, that putting on a shield without wearing a mask can prevent the spread of Covit-19. 😁

Apparently the same group of people who initially said no need to wear masks think so:

MOH guidelines:

"For the general public who need to go out of their homes during this period, any mask including reusable masks, DIY masks or plastic face shields, offer adequate basic protection."

And what's worse the MOH guidelines is, some MPs actually believe in the open plastic shield despite evidence suggesting airborne/aerosol mode of infections.

The face shield would have helped a lot more if the corners of the face shield are tilted nearer the face, so there's less exposure at the sides, like this:

And I'm surprised that no one in parliament stopped her from doing it.

They kept quiet and let her look like a clown?

Hearsay masks will be mandatory for everyone when things open up.

I wonder how to eat in-flight meals with masks on. 😁
