It’s time to call out cyberbullies – children and adults, and examine our own social media habits lest we are unwitting bullies ourselves, says Dr Anuradha Rao.

SINGAPORE: Cyberbullying has claimed yet another innocent victim. R Thivya Nayagi was just 20 when she took her own life on May 20 in Bukit Tengah, Malaysia, allegedly due to relentless cyberbullying on video-sharing social network TikTok.

The video Thivya posted of herself and her male colleague - a migrant worker - on TikTok had sparked criticism, and went viral after being shared on other social media sites, particularly by fake Facebook accounts. She was inundated by hateful messages.

"The post had been widely shared by netizens who continue to make derogatory remarks, suggesting that she was an easy character," her elder sister, R Logeswari, told media afterwards.

"Although we know the truth of her relationship with the boy in the video, yet she was feeling down over the things being said about her."

We don't have these sort of things during the good old days before social media.

Now, it's played out like a death sentence for some.

And for everyone else, if you have nothing to do, just quit social media totally, Disconnect your facebook, twitter, etc.

They are nothing but trouble.

I think for most people, they want to dip their feet in, but they can't take the criticism or bad response and some get pushed over the edge.

They don't know how to IGNORE them. They should simply get out altogether.

Go out and smell the roses, make new friends, get some new hobbies, learn to sew, learn to cook, learn to garden.

Bullying did exist when I was still in school. That's why can see public caning. Haha...

Now is online. Only location has change.

This is why I'm not into the social media thingy. Too open for privacy issues, hackers and bullies.

Real bully can be cane.

But social bully online cannot be punish.

The more u fall for it. The harder they wack u.

Maybe we need a lesson from primary 1 to teach kids how to ignore social media content.

Its easy for ppl like me and alot of bro here to say ignore.

But i am sure we are young once. And we all know how hard it is to do that

Sad. A lot of people took their own lives without making friends with Lexapro. Lexapro could have saved million from suicides annually.

I doubt you can get them w/o seeing a psychologist who can prescribe such drugs/medication. They are not cheap either. So to me it's not widely available to everyone unless they seek help.

Why I don't do social media.

Deleted FB.

Deleted LinkedIn (they got my data exposed during a hack)

Never signed up for Twitter or Instagram.

Exited all group chats. Refuse to join new ones.

This is basically the only local forum I visit. And I won't be doing any more MUs, not worth knowing more people than I already know.

For some, esp the younger gen, it is. Ore difficult to ignore. Imagine they grew up in a world where such avenues were their primary means of communication and in a world where high chance, their parents are both working. Then imagine the past few months, no going out, no socialising. And everyday they get hundreds of ppl telling them to go kill themselves. It will be difficult.

I think to put it into context for the dinos here, imagine you grow up and your phone kept ringing and your mailbox keeps getting filled up with ppl telling you to go kill yourself. Or maybe your sms keeps having the same hateful words. Sure of cos you can ignore it, but am pretty sure some of the msgs will get to you one day.

You all old dinos different becos u all grew up in a different environment and are now older. So it's easier to switch to ignore.

Not like babyblade, still young.
