15-Year-Old To Serve 100-Hour Community Service After Taking Father’s Taxi On Joyride

The legal age for someone to drive in Singapore stands at 18 years old, and for good reason.

Yet in Oct 2019, Sean Chan Wei Lun – then 15 years old – took his father’s taxi for a spin with his friends and crashed into a building.

He was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and 100 hours of community service on Friday (5 Jun).

15-year-old crashes father’s taxi in Marsiling

According to TODAY, Chan – who is now 16 – took his father’s car keys without permission at around 12.20am on 23 Oct 2019.

Chan then brought 2 friends on a joyride, despite not knowing how to operate the taxi himself.

The underage driver lost control of the vehicle while making a left turn at the junction of Riverside Road and Marsiling Industrial Estate Road 8 — mounting a kerb and uprooting a stop sign before crashing into a wall.

The collision punctured both left tyres and severely damaged the vehicle’s front.

Chan’s friends – aged 15 and 14 – sustained multiple injuries as a result of the incident.

The former suffered deep cuts to his lips and abrasions to his chest.

The younger of the 2 dislocated his foot, had lacerations on his lips, as well as abrasions to his right forearm.

15-year-old’s relationship with father soured after incident

On Friday (5 Jun), Chan was sentenced to 18 months’ probation for 3 charges. During the period, he will be required to remain indoors from 10pm-6am.

He also has to perform 100 hours of community service.

Chan’s father was reportedly absent during the hearing due to health reasons. However, District Judge May Mesenas said the pair’s relationship has soured after the incident, reported TODAY.

In relation to this, She told the younger Chan that he should reconcile with his father during his probation.

Hope he mends relationship with his father

We hope Chan learns from this incident and will be successful in mending his relationship with his father.

Driving without a proper license is extremely dangerous and can result in serious injuries and even death.

Don't think the father can claim insurance for the repair.

Shag.

Gotta fork out the repair cost.

Anyone with a 15 year old kid, must keep your spare key away from them!!!!

How long his dad has to drive taxi to pay off the repairs cost? During the covid19  times are hard for taxi drivers. Now this. Pity the dad.

This is a very valuable lesson for all parents to share with their children.

Do stupid things like this at 15 year old cannot go to jail.

Want to do stupid things do when young.

The taxi driver should have a bigger perspective.

He might not be happy having to pay for the damages

But he will feel a lot worse if his son and frens were not alive.

Any problem that can be solved by money is not a real problem.

So I have been told.

Anyway if it was my boy that did this I won't even be bothered.

After his 18 month of probation

I will just send him to Pakistan to work in a factory

making football trainers or jerseys.

After he has made enough money to pay for the repairs

he can come back if he like.

Like a new skill and learn responsibility.

Life changing experience.

He shouldn't complain, kids younger than that can do it why not him?

And maybe he can bring back a Pool jersey for me

This is only true if one has the ability to pay it off. Considering his poor health and loss of income due to his taxi being damaged and also considering that he has to bear some of the cost for the damage, I would think this is a big issue for the taxi uncle.

Hehe if it's my boy I will be pissed.

And if he says Dad the most important thing is I am alive.

I would say after I deal with you being dead will be less painful.

:D

I am just kidding I won't be angry.  I will just send him to Pakistan to work in a kids sweat shop making football trainers and jerseys. And after he paid off the repairs I will ask him to bring me back a new Liverpool Jersey.
