Well all these are maybe 4 years back. 

25 yr ago i went with 2 frens to sichuan (九寨沟，峨眉山，长江三峡）. We just took a flight to chengdu, then found hotel and signed up the local tours there to save $$, and travelled together with the locals. For first 2, the tour agency didn't check our IDs, and we paid local rates. Of course standard not high for what we paid. We were prepared to have to pay more if found out.

Only for 三峡 -- those days it wasn't flooded yet -- we didn't dare to take chance and declared we're foreigners and paid more. We were scared if found out, might get thrown overboard 😅

i realised a year before that, on another trip to Beijing, that they charge either 2 or 3 rates: 

Some places have only 2: Locals （内宾） and Foreigners （外宾）

Some places have 3 types: Locals, Overseas Chinese （海外华侨）,  and Foreigners; prices in increasing rates in that order.

One thing left a lasting impression at 北海公园：

The ticket booth had a sign that said

入门票五角

Admission Fees 40 Yuan
