TFR only a pathetic 1.14 now. Like it or not, unless things and mindsets change drastically, importation of foreigners-turned-singaporeans is something unavoidable. But it must be done in a controlled manner, not outright importation of entire villages, forming enclaves/ghettos and thus discouraging mixing or assimilation with the local culture.

This is gonna be a long-term project. Starting from taking in these foreigners when they are young, as students, encouraging them to put in their roots here. Not by taking in grown-up professionals whose cultural norms and value systems are already fixed, and thus unable to assimilate well.

Agree, reproducing to replace ourselves is just not going to happen. Question is with our rapidly aging SG population, migration may need to accelerate just to keep the numbers constant or growing at 2-3%. How?

We probably will need to take in some mature skilled professionals too but in a calibrated manner without diluting the Singapore core. Supplement and not supplant.

Calibrating entry of foreign professionals is one thing; we also got to develop the youth's mentality - majority seemed to have lost their "edge" or propensity to bear hardship (because life is so easy and comfy!) - thus losing out when in direct competition with foreign immigrants. In other words, though we are descended from immigrants ourselves, we have somewhat lost the very good qualities that made immigrants successful, wherever they are in the world.

This is a common problem in many developed nations, that's why you see in the West, the locals are also getting uncomfortable with foreigners in their midst.

We need to attract more Malaysia-born immigrants, maybe the Indonesians also. They are culturally much closer to existing core population.

Taiwanese are good also, very similar stock to local chinese, but honestly I think they almost certainly will only treat here as working place, their long-term living env back in TW is superior.

Actually India Indian and China Chinese are also ok, but they are unlikely to sink permanent roots here.

Why do we need so many people to crowd this tiny island? What's wrong with 3 mil population like in the old days?

So many people, not scared to island tip over?

Those who come here to work, even obtain SPR or even citizens, i think most of them would not sink permanent roots here la, esp if they still have family back in their home country. Unless their whole family and clan all moved to sg, then maybe they would sink their roots here. I know people who have got their citizens here, but still thinking to go back home country to retire when they are old.

When you are that rich, need to diversify.

Even if you have 100bil, give up 50 bil so that you don't have to constantly worry about when someone is coming after you is also worth it.
