Hi all gurus,

I am driving a HRV and had my wheel changed from the original stock 215/60/16 to 225/50/17.

I was told by agent that this is wrong fitting

The tyre shop (popular S***F*** Tyre) sold me 17x8jj, offset 42 which I was also told by many that 215/55/17 should be my correct size, and the rim should be 17x7jj or 17x7.5jj.

Hoping to get some opinions from gurus here.

225/50/17 is even smaller in overall diameter than 215/60/16, i upsized my rim but my wheel became smaller. Joke lol!

I think thread starter is referring to side view, which is the overall diameter of the wheel (rim and tyre). 215/55/17 should be the closest match and not much deviation from the factory speedo meter. The bigger size of your rim, the less rubber you will see. And keep the same wheel diameter based on the car manufacturers design. You can use tyre calculator for your comparison before making the change.

225/50/R17(656mm overall wheel diameter)  is only 1.1% smaller in total diameter from 215/60/16(664 mm wheel diameter).  If you change to 215/17, that will still give you 0.6% larger diameter than the original. You will not be able to  find the exact diameter once you change the rim size. Visually, no one could tell the diff among the three.

What did your agent say is wrong ?  is he referring to the offset that is wrong or the wheel size is wrong ?

What is the original offset?

did you ask the agent what should the correct size ?

he should not just say wrong and walk away.  Dont panic, go clarify with your agent.

On 8j vs 7j, 8j fits 225 nicely, whereas 215 fits 7j better. both 225/8j and 215/7j are correct.

Lets hear from other bros.

Put 225/55-17 just nice.

225/55/17 is  2.2%  oversize from the original.

1-2% makes not much diff. An example is is250. Running 225/45/17 front and 245/45/17 rears. Both on 17x8 wheels. Go figure.

in the end Speedo out then speedo out lor. Just use a GPS to know the true speed. Speedos are off by some margins anyway. And yes your total mileage might be affected. But for certain less than what a used car dealer would adjust it by. Haha.

Speedometers are never made accurate by car manufacturers after all, most of the speedometers are made to read 5% to 10% faster than the actual speed on the road.

Actually 225 fits 7.5” very well, in terms of visual appearance. And 215 for 7”. 8” with 225, Stretches the tire by that’s wee bit to make the sidewalls a bit straighter and give slightly better handling.
Stock is 215/60/16 with 7x16 et55. With 8x17 et42, the wheel face moving approx 26mm outwards or approx 1in will make it more flush with the fender.

i think the tire options on 225/50/17 are more performance oriented than 215/55/17, which is the recommended specs. I wholeheartedly agree with what Stamford put on.

215.55.17 is more accurate then 225.50.17.

+0.4% dia vs -1.1% in dia

frankly speaking, its very very small different. but given that your rim is 17x8 u got no choice other then to use 225 width tyre.

in fact i feel 17x8 should use 235 already .( but 235 width tyres for 17' rim is extremely rare and odd) so for your rim 225.50.17 is the best choice

generally i feel

17x7 for 215

17x7.5 for 225

17x8 for 235

Yes, 225 on a 7jj may make a tyre side wall looks rounded also.

Anyway I dont know why the agent said was wrong, some of these SAs are clown, or maybe next they will say warranty void 😤😤

Different brand of tyres with the same "official" width, may not end up having the same width after inflating and mounting.

Both are "205" but you can see the difference. Some tyre manufacturers declare the inflated tread width. For example, on the right is a 205/50R16 RE71r, after inflation is 8.4", which fits a 16x8 rim.

Left: 205/45/17

Right: 205/50/16

Relax bro - this small difference is very insignificant.

Most important is there is no rubbing on the fender when you do a full turn (Either left/right)

You can always change to another tyres spec when this set worn out.

spot on. even inside the same brand  different model  the width is slightly different visually ( they actually measure by the contact surface)

various model esp after adding the rim protector strip become much wider. like potenza or sportmaxx.

toyo alway appear smaller ( or exact size)from my experience

the thing that alway the same across different brand and model is the diameter.

dont over react about all this recommendations

tire size conversion can be made in many way or conversion.

always looks for Car manufacturers recommendation if you are worry about OE specification.

for HRV   Honda  recommends  215/55/17 on Original wheel width 7.0 inch  Agent only accept this correct me if i am wrong)

so if base on the OE wheel width 7.5 inch can have a range of tire width from 205 to 225

base on tire size 215 can accept 6.5 to 8 inch .

for me (HRV or Veel )i will fit 215/55/17(Honda recommendation) or 225/55/17 (after market)

my POV your 8 inch wheel can accept 215/55/17

just MPO

it can accept but super ugly, and rim very easy to scatch, not only that its dangerous, if puncture cos the tyres is stretch to the side,  when puncture the risk of tyre dislodge from rim is higher.

it can be accepted when u got no choice. u got no option.

but if u are a paying customer, and u not in a hurry to change at once, why would u compromise on it??
