A week-old baby girl in Melaka had her right arm bitten off by a family dog after it mistook her for food.

8 World reported that the incident happened on September 8. The baby girl was only a week old and appeared jaundiced, so a relative put her outside in the sunlight.

Unfortunately, the family dog thought that the baby girl was food and bit off the portion of her right arm right up to her shoulder.

When the family came out of the house later, they discovered, to their horror, the baby girl bloodied and crying. She was rushed to a hospital in Kuala Lumpur where she underwent a 10-hour surgery to reattach her severed arm.

Unfortunately, due to her age and tiny blood vessels, the surgeons were unable to reattach her arm.

8 World reported that the girl is still under observation in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit.

The authorities later found that the family dog was unlicensed. It was also found to be unstable and was later taken to a veterinary clinic. It will be isolated for two weeks and checked for rabies.

8 World also reported that the dog will be euthanised once it is diagnosed.

When your baby is 1month old, I dun think any sane parent will leave it unattended.

The girl located in Melaka rushed to a hospital in KL.  Wouldn't she died before reaching hospital?

Either story is badly written or fake news.

Most dogs are generally protective of their pack/family. But some breeds are better with children then others.

Could well be a fake story. Most owners would have a set routine feeding Dogs. They will know when it's meal time. Where the food will be placed and how its presented to them (in a bowl or what).

For a dog to bite someone accidentally is no biggie. But to maul something until got blood etc? Either aggressive breed, wild dog bah.

Fighting and eating is two separate issues.

He said that in the 10am incident, the child's aunt took her out to get some sunlight as the baby had developed jaundice.

"The child was in her cradle placed near the front grille of the house," he said on Friday, adding that the baby girl was the couple's first child.

Mr Mohd Nor said the aunt then went back inside to make arrangements to bathe the baby.

"However, she heard the baby crying and saw the dog viciously attacking the child," he said.

He said the aunt panicked and started screaming for help.

At the time, the child's father was on the upper floor tending to his wife, who was still in confinement.

"The baby, who was covered in a pool of blood, was rushed to a private hospital before being referred to the Melaka Hospital.

"The child was later referred to Kuala Lumpur Hospital and is still in critical condition," he said.

He added that the case would be investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides provisions for ill-treatment, neglect, abandonment or exposure of children that leads to physical or emotional injuries.

Mr Mohd Nor said the dog that attacked the baby is a plott hound, a large breed said to have been originally bred to hunt bears.
